“Excellent Indian food”
Reviewed January 11, 2012

By far the best restaurant we've visited this week in Kigali. Every course was excellent: tender chicken (according to my non-vegetarian friend), spicy vegetarian dishes, delightful cottage cheese curry, lovely fish curry. The nan bread were Rusholme (Curry Mile, Manchester) standard. All of this was washed down with a couple of oversized Skol beers (RF1,300 each). We ate in a group of 9 and the service was impeccable. I spotted a couple of native Indian chefs in the glass fronted kitchen, which is a good sign.

One recommendation: offer popadum (instead of salad) at the start of the meal.

Good central location too.

“Best Indian food outside of India”
Reviewed March 13, 2010

I've been eating at Zaaffran (formerly called Handee) since the first week it opened. I think that in that first week I ate there three times, with countless additional visits over the past year.

The food is top notch, some of the best I've found anywhere in the world. The decor and colors create an interesting vibe, though I can't say that I've ever seen anybody in India wearing anything similar!

I really haven't been disappointed by anything on the menu, but some standout dishes include the Mutton Aanarkhali, both the Dal Makhani and Dal Tadka, the Murg Sagwaala, and the Chicken Tikka Masala (cliche, but unbelievably good).

Spices and Indian vegetables are imported weekly by the owner, who runs a grocery store in the main business district of Kigali. Lucky, the manager, is very friendly and has done a good job building an attentive and responsive team of waiters. Many of the chefs are from Delhi and supposedly will be expanding the menu soon; we'll have to see what new and delicious dishes the kitchen cooks up.

People love to debate whether Khana Khazana or Zaaffran is better. Honestly, they are both great but there is just something intangible that has convinced me of Zaaffran's superiority. You won't go wrong by eating here.
