Move from Chelsea hotel to Sheraton purely because congress I was attending was in Sheraton; wished i had remained at Chelsea hotel . Everything at Sheratona in grossly overpriced, You even have to pay 3000 Naira a day for ihe internet which should be free ( and is so in the Chelsea hotel). My room was adequate in size but vere old fashioned and poorly furnished with poorly execeuted laminate flooring and old styyle TV. Worse was the musty smell and inadequate A/C sytem. Staff are very friendly . Food in hotel reasonable by Nigerian standards but grossly overpriced. Worst issue for me ( and I am no prude having travelled the world for 40 years) was the accceptance by hotel managment of hordes of prostitutes ( mainly in the evening) in the main bar, lobby area and outsiade entrance area. This was somewhat embarrassing to say the least for my female black American colleague! Would never return to this hotel., even if they do renovate the rooms which i understood is planned.

Ok, the best hotel in town - based on facilities is the Hilton. Sheraton physical plant has been neglected over the years but the current GM is making improvements. A new model room is expected in November of this year. Having spent about 80 days at the Sheraton in the last 12 months, you go there for a few good reasons - at least in my view. The staff is great ,extremely friendly and helpful. The restaurants are great. Sit outside one evening at Luigi's watching the fountain and the people and you'll see what I mean. Finally, the ambiance is relaxed, more of a home town/family feeling versus the bustle/traffic/crowded Hilton. The rooms are adequate and there are occasional problems due to the age of some infrastructure - but it is getting better as noted. If the room is important to you, go to the Hilton (or maybe one of the three Proteas in town). However, if you can live with an average room (though not bad by African standards) but want a less stressful, more relaxed atmosphere where you get treated like family with good food, stay at the Sheraton. Also, there is a new multiplex cinema and shopping mall across the street from the hotel. It is in a better location than the Hilton and has siginificantly less vehicle congestion than the Hilton.

I lived in the Sheraton for two and a half years from 2001 and returned recently for a two month stay. After such a long time it is almost a home away from home. Almost nothing had changed! The same incredibly friendly staff, same power issues in the gym (watch out for power outages while on the treadmill); but now with tables under the trees outside the Elephant Bar - especially good for those that don't feel comfortable inside, and excellent steaks in the Obudu Grill. The Manager is terrific and puts on regular cocktails for SPG guests, and the staff go to great efforts to make you feel welcome. The rooms have long faded so don't expect NY or London style 5-star luxury even though you are paying NY and London prices plus plus. You won't get it, But that is a problem of high Nigeria costs in general, not the Sheraton. .Despite the high costs compared with other international standards, is a hell of a lot better than its similarly priced competitors and for long stays you can negotiate a better deal. The internet prices are a but steep but it is fast and reliable. The hotel is well located and very safe and in the now nearly three years I have stayed there on and off I have never once had a problem.

When I arrived in the Sheraton I was expecting a lot better from a 5 star hotel. The rooms are dated with various issues. I must admit that after speaking to the staff I managed to get into the club level rooms that although still dated in decore were a lot better than the standard rooms. The staff are very helpful and willing to do anything they can to try and make your stay a good one. The Elephant Bar is not to be recommended if you are not looking for company (way to many pushy girls who struggle to take no for an answer). If you are like me and just want a quiet drink and a chat with other guests then go down to the pool bar where the management ensures that the pushy girls stay away.
In general I have stayed in better hotels but I have also stayed in worse. While problems did occur if you asked they were quickly resolved. I can only recommend this hotel as there is very little choice elsewhere and I would not want to risk anywhere else. Rooms were cleaned every day, food was good, staff were helpful.
Please though Sheraton Hotels try to make sure your upcoming refit is done by professionals.

The only thing good about the Abuja Sheraton is the service from the staff. Apart from that, its not great. The rooms are dated and have a smell and feel of not being cleaned thoroughly. Its inside-out layout is not ideal for a tropical country with many insects. The rooms are pretty sparse with small tv's with no childrens channels. The night we were there, the air conditioning was not working and the room was a bit cooler than an oven (but only just). Staff said they were aware and would sort it out. The next day, still not fixed, so we checked out.

Dear Sir
Thank you for your feedback concerning your recent stay at Sheraton Abuja Hotel. The comfort of our customers is the most important factor for us, and we are always striving to improve on the guest experiences. Our aim is to provide excellent & individual service, in a relaxed atmosphere, to fit the need of every guest in the hotel. So we do take your comments very seriously, and we need all the ‘feed-back’ possible in order to better understand where we need to progress.

We have had several serious capital priorities to contend with, and we have had to first improve on the backbone of the building and structures. Items such as new generators, new air-handling units and new chillers have been installed in the past months, and we will now turn our attention to the guest rooms and corridors. We have US$ 10 Million allocated to be invested within the next 12 months to upgrade the rooms, corridors and general ‘front of house’ areas. We are currently in the process of building the new model room and expect it ready by September this year.

In conclusion, please rest assured that we will be making every effort to bring this wonderful & unique hotel back to former glory. I hope personally to meet you on your next visit and please let me know in advance of your arrival, so I may ensure that your stay is comfortable and relaxing.

Yours sincerely,

Morten Ebbesen

It is nearly as expensive as the "Nikkon", the premeir Hilton Hotel but is not nearly as nice. It does not come up to western standards at all and in fact some of the local Nigerian hotels at the same price are just as good. If it was not trying to compare itself with the Nikkon, and if it were a bit less expensive, it may be passable but under the current conditions it is not worth the hassle.
Here is a list of reasons why I rated it poor:
1) even though they say they take credit cards, it was a riduculously difficult hassle to use one to pay
2) The air conditioning did not cool the room properly even after we had it "fixed"
3) Even though we were in a "refurbished" room the lock on the sliding patio door did not work and the lock on the door to the room was questionable at best
4) Most of the "refurbished" rooms are located near the bar so the noise levels are very loud in the evenings and on the weekends
5) Usually only 1 of the elevators was working, ok sometimes 2, but this meant very long waits
6)Room service was very slow (but probably related to the infrequent elevators)
7) Pool did not seem to be cleaned on a daily basis
8)Food was limited in selection and very slow to replenish food (if it was done at all)
9)Staff was friendly but very slow
10) It took so long to check out (also a long time to check in!) that I nearly missed my flight
11) smoking is allowed in the lobbies so often smell of smoke and not condusive to sitting for a quiet drink
12) Oh nearly forgot we had to change rooms because the first "refurbished" room did not have a working air conditioner

Except the Name and the lobby nothing justifies this to be a four star hotel.

I stayed there 7 nights and find it extremely disappointing. Lets start: 1) out of the 5 elevators there are working 2, max., which means a lot of waiting 2) your room door is probably blocked and you bette ensure that it is really closed when you leave the room 3) air conditioning was not ajustable in my room 4) I had to change rooms because the safety boxes did not work 5) you have to pay for internet, but the cable in my room was pure docoration 6) the shower experiences are of the hot-cold-hot alternating type 7) laundry service is very late, which is painful when you want to check out and miss half of your stuff 8) my balcony door did not lock, 9) when you are close to the bar noise levels at night can be quite impressive 10) there seems to be a lot of prostitution going on.

Ohh, and I forgot: Food is good, but expensive. The choices are very limited.

I know that Abuja is a tough place to find a hotel with a good price-quality ratio. Unfortunately, this hotel does not fit this cathegory.
