“Over looking River Niger”
Reviewed December 15, 2012

This hotel is located in avery nice location..the terrace resturanent over looking river nice gives a spectacular view.
The lobby is better and bigger than other hotels in Niamey...has a curio shop and also some other shops. the resturant we had buffet lunch is also located at the lobby level...the lunch was reasonable.. the salads were very good ...especially for a vegetarian like me.The dessert was also good.
The terrace resturant was just outside the lobby.. gives a very good view of river Niger and the greenery.
the staff were polite but language is an issue.
The buildings were in cream unlike the pinkish buildings of Niamey...hence look dirtier because of the sand storms etc

Generally, the GRAND HOTEL could best be described as a modest Hotel with some touches of modernity. I have stayed here for about six times to date.During my first two stay (in the main building on the first visit, and at the extensions during my second) my computer could not be connected to the internet; but I had very excellent connection on my last visit (five days ago) when I stayed in one of the bungalows. The major language is French, but some of the staff do try their best to communicate in English which is quite understandable. The buffet lunch is fine and anyone out to taste local delicacies in a warm environment will love it. Room service, emmmm, slow when available, but not so cool generally!. Its difficult to be served room dinner as everything seem to be concentrated on the pool side barbecue. I ve never seen anyone use the swimming pool. The TV is all french with few arabic channels (one or two I think) which is a very big minus if you dont speak french.. The biggest catcher for this hotel is the environment. Fantastic! with very excellent ambience

Room Tip: Go for One of the bungalows.

In general the whole proposition of this hotel is really poor. However, it is always full as only 3 hotels have a security agreement to receive tourist/expatriated workers...

The view is nice, and you could appreciated it for a long long long moment as the service outside is really really really long. Last time we waited for 1H30 before seing our "brochettes" coming ...

Each time i really hope the managers will improve their services, as they are far away of a convenient one, but each time i come back nothing has changed ...

I do not speak about towels and bedding which are out of age. And when i see all the girls outside waiting for foreigner i am a bit disgusting of what my bed could have seen before me.

The environment is ok. The Hotel sits on the bank of the Niger with a beautiful view covering a wide area and the bridge. If you speak only English, communication with Staff may be a challenge but they are courteous enough. the restruant and room excellence is the strong point here.

Room Tip: Bungallows are quiet enough and a bit secluded.Good for family and couple.

GRAND HOTEL, NIAMEY, FOUR STARS

This is a modest hotel with much to be modet about. There are 12 channels on the TV, but all in French or Arabic. The best of the lot is France 24. No one uses the unheated pool. The breakfast room serves undistinguished breakfasts, but doubles at undistinguished buffet lunches.

The rooms are clean, and the A-C works. There is room service. Many guests prefer to do their Emails in the reception, near the hotspot. The bar is open all hours for the serious drinkers.

What sets the Grand off from the Terminus and the Gaweye is the lovely terrace restaurnt, overlooking the river. I liked the crepes au jambon, served from 7.45 PM. Some like the pizzas. De gustibus non disputandum est.The service is unhurried, to put it nicely, but why hurry in an ambience like this?

If you get bored by the menu, which is not too long, try the Pilier or the Bellissimo in town for good continental cuisine.

Do your check-out well in advance. The accounts are not computerized, so you wait while the guy writes out your totals in longhand.

Room Tip: Ask for a view of the river. Alternately, to save money, ask for a bungalow.

This is a nice getaway from the hustle and bustle of Niamey. The outdoor dining area overlooking the Niger river is gorgeous. Be sure to order brochettes and une bière niger! The pool is really nice too.

Niamey is a challenging environment in which to run a hotel catering to international visitors. The challenges include heat, duststorms, power outages, crime, poor Internet connectivity, and water shortages. Nevertheless, the hotel copes relatively well. The housekeeping, restaurant, bar and reception staff are friendly and competent. The rooms are clean and well lit. The hotel is close to government ministries and embassies and the airport. It has a beautiful setting overlooking the Niger River and the Kennedy Bridge. There are a few modest convenience stores and restaurants just outside the hotel compound. There is an attractive pool, but the water is usually too hot and dusty to enjoy fully. A terrace bar and restaurant are pleasant in the evening, but the restaurant does not open until 8:00 PM. The continental breakfast could be improved with the addition of local fruits and a more varied selection. The hotel should also make room for a gym. There is not much to do if one is stuck, as I was, in the hotel for a month. The hotel is often fully booked, so one should use local connections and savoir faire to get a room.

Room Tip: There is no lift, so persons who don't like to climb too many stairs should request a second-flo...
