The menu emphasis lies on game meat but also caters for non-meat lovers. It however is not geared toward fine dining. Reservations are essential as the restaurant is well frequently booked out.

Ok so the food is not exactly top drawer but you go there mainly for the experience - and you HAVE to go to see all the weird stuff collected over the years. Check it out - even for just a beer (try the Camelthorn Beer - awesome). Managed like a well oiled machine, this place is packed every night and service is fast and slick. Great fun. Be warned the tables are big so you may share with strangers - but after a few beers you are all friends!!

Joe's Beerhouse is a maze of little niches with Namibian museum like artefacts (from the German colonial period) for decoration and hundreds and hundreds of Jaegermeister bottles (empty of course!) along the windows sills top and bottom. You sit at long wooden tables and hardish benches. Large fires and gas lamps are lit in winter. It is constantly a hive of activity. Food is apparently great if you are a huge meat eating fan: real game, from the grasslands and sometimes crocodile from the river (north) is served. Fish and Chicken are also on the menu. If you are a vegetarian, like I am, there are only some choices usually crumbed. The green asparagus (when available) not crumbed, is a very good porrtion with a large baked potato; unfortunately with no sauce/butter for the potato . The best is spinach & feta canneloni, lots of tomato and onion salsa/sauce - ask for more parmesan cheese and you get it - and is succulent and comes with a little side salad. Service is good. Last night I watched food taken through the little mazes which explained why a lot of meals arrive warm, not hot. Mine was just warm. Suggestion: Joe's should have covers for the food to keep the meal hot, particularly in winter. Joe's is very busy and is open 365 days a year! Not many restaurants can say that! Plenty of parking available.

If you are in Windhoek, you have to try this place. You will not get a gourmet meal, but the atmosphere and surroundings make up for it. Two in our party tried the Bushman kabob (zebra, oryx, kudu, ostrich and crocodile) and loved it. I'm not much of a meat eater, so I had a pasta dish with salad that was pretty good. The service was a little slow, but it was rather crowded. There are artifacts and antiques everywhere you look. It was truly a unique experience.

As locals we were in Joe's not the first time. But even with a reservation it was a little bit chaotic to get our table. Staff friendly and fast. Food was good but not the level of our last visit. Portions big for the money. Our friends were impressed by the atmosphere, a "must see" in Namibia, recorded in every travel guide. The noise level sometimes very high.

I took a couple of Friends from India to Joe's and they loved it soo much to the point that they wanted to live in there forever. The bartenders give extremely good service. Love it every time.
