The menu emphasis lies on game meat but also caters for non-meat lovers. It however is not geared toward fine dining. Reservations are essential as the restaurant is well frequently booked out.

“An institution with great Eisbein”
Reviewed November 16, 2013

Joe's has been an institution in Windhoek for many years and is worth a visit. It is obviously frequented by many tourists, but locals still flock there for a good evening.

Great place for a jovial evening with a crowd and expect to hook up with others as you may share one of the large tables. The décor can keep you amused if the conversation is not to your liking.

Service can be slow to non-existent at times, so make sure you order your next drink well before your current one runs out.

Eat the Eisbein, it's delicious! Not a place for vegetarians, then again Namibia isn't full stop ;)

Oh, take a flat pillow if you're going to be seated at one of the large tables with the benches, your butt will thank you.

“A Windhoek Institution”
Reviewed November 15, 2013

An institution in Windhoek, this is one of those restaurants that has become a tourist 'must do' in its own right. The decor might be the definition of quirky. Agricultural paraphernalia, hunting trophies, old drinks bottles and advertisements . . . even an old Mini on a roof . . . all cluttered together on every wall and ceiling. It is huge with inside and outside areas going off in all directions. It's great fun. Service was willing and friendly. There's a wide menu with lots of game meat as well as more usual dishes. We found the food good but, strangely for a restaurant, that's almost beside the point! Booking seems essential at all times.

“Interesting atmosphere with average food.”
Reviewed November 11, 2013

The place is covered in memorabilia and artifacts from the area and beyond. Interesting in a kitchy sort of way. The food was mixed. One of our group of four liked their choice, but the rest of us were not impressed. Good beer.

“Make reservations!”
Reviewed November 10, 2013

A fun place to eat with many choices to eat, including game. Very crowded and a bit of a drive from downtown. The German was good, but lots of other choices. The beer list was a disappointment. Seems Joe sold out a while back. Many tour groups. Still a good time!

It's big, but very well laid out, so you can sit in a corner and pretend that there's not 500 other people there.

Food was good, but nothing spectacular. Service was ok, but everyone seemed rushed all the time. We were seated on a bench table for 6, even though we had booked for just 2. Wine was decent and value for money was there as much as it is for all restaurants in Windhoek.

Probably better to visit for a couple of drinks than for food. There are other places locally that are better for the same price.
