“Great first and last stop before the bush”
Reviewed June 16, 2013

We stayed here a total of three nights. Two upon our arrival in Namibia and the other on our last night in country. We both enjoyed our stay as the place acts as an oasis from traffic and other noise. Although there are some barking dogs nearby. Both of our rooms were large and the bathrooms huge. The staff is really nice and helpful in every way. We ate dinner twice and it was very, very good and not overpriced. The owner is also very active and friendly. Breakfast was super with all sorts of possibilities. We need to stay longer just to sample all the great food. We would stay here again.

This hotel is located within walking distance (daytime) from the centre of Windhoek. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the breakfast was excellent. My room (room #1) was fine - comfortable and spacious. My only criticism is that the glass door into the room open on the courtyard and breakfast & dinner area, so I had to close the curtains in front of the door if I wanted privacy in my room.

Room Tip: Check the room first if you have a choice. Room 1 opens onto the courtyard & dining area, so you...

The welcoming at the guesthouse is a bit overwhelming and to my taste exaggerated. You feel that all staff members have the duty to shake hands. It was too familiar for me. The room we had was rather small. To close the curtains was a bit of a tough mission. The mattress is an old fashion spring mattress and of a terrible quality, I didn't have a good nights rest. The TV is placed in an open cupboard, it felt like a hospital set up. The table outside our room had no chairs, very unprofessional and a very desolate view.. My omelette at breakfast was served on a very very hot plate, I almost burned my fingers. Overall I would rate this guesthouse as average even overpriced and run on a very amateurish manner.

Thank you for your feedback on our guesthouse. We feel we must comment on our staff; most of them have been with us for many years and genuinely have a very friendly manner and enjoy meeting the guests. Arriving guests are usually met by the manager, or if he/she is busy with another guest at the time, then the receptionist goes out to meet them. One of the men will assist with luggage, and he then obviously also welcomes the guests. We do not instruct our staff to shake hands with all the guests, we request them to be aware that we work in a guest-friendly environment, and to therefore greet any guest they may pass anywhere on the property, with a polite and friendly ‘hallo’. I once stayed at a guesthouse where the manager rushed out and hugged me hallo – that I found too familiar.

All the tables outside guests’ rooms do have chairs, although sometimes guests do move these around, or to other tables if they are a bigger group. It is certainly strange that there were no chairs at your table for the entire duration of your stay, and we apologise for this inconvenience. Please do bear in mind, that often a quick word to the manager, or to one of the friendly staff on site, could get a problem like this resolved on the spot.

We have not had any complaints from other guests about the comfort of the mattress in your room and we do in fact have high quality mattresses and linen on all our beds. Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention, we will continue to monitor the quality of our bedding in the future.

We apologise that your breakfast plate was too hot, we have addressed this matter with the kitchen staff and hope to get the temperature of our plates perfect in the future.

In conclusion, we are sorry that the guesthouse was not to your liking, and we have noted your comments.

The pros first: warm welcome, secure parking and great breakfast menu and buffet. Also, clean beds and towels. Cons: The room (so we could have separate twin beds) on our first night didn't materialize so they kindly moved us to a small one that did. Unfortunately for us it was dark and miniature - not a good combo for older guests. I personally and intensely disliked the concrete bathroom decor. Not warm or welcoming for shower, bath and too dimly lit to apply makeup. The sink spigots were hard to turn on then water came out too fast for the shallow sink so the counter was always wet and I got wet too.
We returned a few days later as it was previously booked by our travel agent and they had kindly upgraded us to the lovely and spacious Executive Suite. I still personally disliked the huge uninviting concrete bathroom with the same sink problem I referenced above and that it too was dimly lit. I prefer a choice as to my lighting and dislike one being forced upon me. I would never stay here again.

Thank you for taking the time to pass on this feedback. We appreciate that personal tastes differ, and regret that our bathroom décor was not to your liking. Just to mention though – 2 of our rooms do have bathrooms that have the more conventional “white” baths, showers and toilets.
We have noted your comments on the lighting – the bedroom lights are all on a dimmer switch, which should be set to its brightest for check-in, we will reinforce this again with our housekeepers.
We also appreciate you letting us know about the water pressure in the handbasins, this is fixed by means of a simple washer inserted in the water pipe and it sounds as if we need to replace some of these.
In conclusion, we thank you for your positive comments on Olive Grove, and are sorry that the rooms were not to your personal liking. We hope that you enjoyed your overall stay with us, and your holiday to Namibia as a whole.

We stayed in the Olive Grove Guesthouse for our first night in Namibia and it couldn't have been any better. We felt welcomed from the very first second. The room was very spacious, clean and the bathroom was absolutely a happening in itself. The Olive Grove team was very helpful at any time and definitely had an eye on the small details that make a stay in any hotel special. We also had dinner in the hotel restaurant which has a nice atmosphere and the food was excellent. Our waitress - shame on us that we can't tell the name anymore - really was a lot of fun and it was absolutely cool that you could actually watch the awesome female chefs making your food in the show kitchen. They also do have secure parking on the premises, are easy to reach from the airport within an hour, a shopping center can be reached with the car in 5 minutes and you can easily walk into town to explore Windhoek (what probably won't cost you more than a day - or half of it). We neither used pool or spa due of lack of time but at least the small pool looked inviting. All in all we absolutely can recommend the Olive Grove and would come back when visiting Windhoek.

Room Tip: We had room No 3 downstairs and were really happy with that choie. Really the upstairs rooms or even...

Olive Grove was exactly what we wanted and just perfect. They even gave us a free room upgrade on our room for the second night. The staff went out of their way to make sure the trip was truly special and memorable. I would highly recommend the guesthouse as a starting point for travels from Windhoek!

Travel agent booked us here for 3 nights. We left after one.
Guesthouse is in a leafy suburb several kms from the City. We had room 8. Large rectangular room with white walls and ugly huge open grey-black-brown painted concrete bathtub/shower in the middle, with matching wing along the wall with 2 wash basins. Supposed to resemble stonework no doubt. The stand-alone toilet was in a closet nearby with no door, just a pull curtain.
There was a wall unit facing the bed with storage shelves and curtains to cover. On a top shelf near the ceiling, a small tv relic of the 1970s. Near the door area, the furniture was a metal patio table and 2 matching chairs. The flooring was concrete with worn painted pattern.
Ugliest room of our 4 weeks in southern Africa.
And as mentioned by a previous reviewer, it backed on the downstairs kitchen with resultant cooking odours.
All this for R2010 or US$221 per night.
Positives: clean comfortable bed, and good breakfasts.
For R2100 we obtained a nice spacious room for 2 nights at the Protea hotel in central Windhoek, and good breakfasts each day.

We appreciate that the beauty of Trip Advisor is that the comments are entirely the guests’ subjective views. This particular review is so obviously the reviewer’s personal taste and subjective opinions, that we do not believe there is any point in trying to ‘defend’ ourselves. From our side, these guests arrived quite late in the afternoon, and came down to breakfast the next day and said that they would be checking out. Our manager enquired as to whether there was any problem, and also offered to move them to a different room, should they prefer that. The guests advised that they simply wanted to be in “city hotel”, one closer to the centre of town. They did enquire about a refund for the other 2 nights, and we explained that we were not in a position to offer this, as we were fully booked and had been holding this room for them. We did, however, refund them their pre-booked airport transfer with us, as they would not be making use of this service anymore. We are sorry that these guests did not find Olive Grove to be to their liking, and hope that this did not detract too much from the overall enjoyment of their trip to Namibia.
