“Overrated”
Reviewed December 1, 2010

Trip advisor has been useful to me in the past, but this place is way overrated, I have stayed in better back-packers, shared bathrooms, wet and untidy, staff asking for loans with long stories, no internet, breakfast not early enough, not included in the room rate and a bit overpriced. owners seem a bit falsely friendy, need I go on.

Many thanks for your comments, I am very disappointed to hear about your negative experience.

Four of our ten rooms have shared bathroom facilities and these are obviously cheaper than the en-suite rooms. Our central bathroom is cleaned and tidied many frequently throughout the day and I can only apologise that it was not of a satisfactory standard when you stayed with us.

If you can possibly remember the name of the staff member who approached you for a loan please contact our new manager Ciska directly on ciska@infotour-africa.com. This is totally unacceptable and action will be taken. We have recently taken on three new staff so I sincerely hope that whoever spoke to you is one of the people who are no longer with us.

We do have internet which is online from 07h00 until 22h00, and we now have WiFi available for a small cost. Unfortunately I cannot comment on why it was not working while you were here, this is not something which I was made aware of and I will follow up.

Breakfast is offered from 07h00 until 10h00, or later if guests require. We also offer breakfast packs to people who wish to leave earlier than 07h00 and our chef is here from 06h30.

Myself and my husband were actually away on holiday for much of August so it is possible that you did not meet us during your stay. If you did meet us then I apologise if we came across as 'falsely friendly', we try extremely hard to welcome all our guests genuinely and have spent many years offering help and advice to travellers from all over the world. My husband is on site from 08h00 until 19h00 most days to step in and assist the managers when needed.

Our rates are among the cheapest in Windhoek for the facilities offered and we do feel that we offer a genuine, friendly and value for money experience. We are very sorry that this was not your impression and we will endevour to constantly improve our standards of service.

Best regards,
Charlotte

We spent two nights B & B at Rivendell. Very comfortable room - good breakfast. Nice bar.
Staff very friendly and helpful.
Nice swimming pool, which could be a little warmer!
Flag a taxi outside for the city centre rather than book to save money.
Certainly go back there again.

Windhoek is a very busy and hectic city, so great to have this respite in the middle of it all. There is also a small restaurant across the street so we did not have to fight the traffic. The pool and deck area are perfect for relaxing. We preferred the apartment to the rooms poolside, but would also recommend the rooms with shared bath in the house. The manager could not be more helpful or friendly. We do recommend going to the copy place in town near the Symot and Checkers grocery for internet however, it's half the price and twice as fast.

Rivendell is a very nice place to start your trip around Namibia. It is very central and yet calm with a friendly and helpful staff. Strongly recommended.

We stayed at Rivendell twice at the beginning and end of our trip. The rooms were huge as were the bathrooms, there was a nice little pool and the kitchen facilities very good - lots of pots, sharp knives etc.
Some of the people seemed to be long-term guests which made for a slightly odd atmosphere. I guess people who are staying for a long time can't be bothered with people like us who were in and out over night, which is fine, but we didn't find it the friendliest of places.
The staff were efficient but not overly friendly, however when specific help was requested, they most definitely rose to the occasion, for which we were very grateful.
On the downside the locks on the rooms were really difficult and on our second stay, as we didn't go out, we just didn't bother locking it after trying for some time. We did mention this on check out and perhaps it has been addressed.
And lastly on our second stay we were in a twin room and one of the beds was fine but the other was like a sleeping on a bad sofabed with a really thin mattress and springs coming through preventing a decent nights sleep.
So as I said, we had mixed feelings, see if you can try the beds first :)

I loved the pleasant informality of Rivendell: helpful but unobtrusive staff, an accessible kitchen where I could make myself a cup of tea, a delicious breakfast with other adventuresome visitors of all ages, good location (an easy walk into town), and exceedingly reasonable rates. I was going on safari and worried what I'd do with luggage, but at Rivendell there was no problem. Free of charge they'll put your case into safe storage so that you can head off with only what you need for game drives, etc. This was a huge advantage. And returning to Rivendell after my safari was like returning home!

Rivendell is one of 4 budget lodges/backpackers listed in the popular Coast to Coast back packers guide.

So when reading this review, please bear in mind that it is written from the viewpoint that it is a budget lodge.

This is quite an important consideration, and one missed by many reviewers. One cannot fairly compare an upmarket establishment costing 5 or 10 times the price with a budget place.

As it is, this is the best lower budget place I have stayed at while in Windhoek, and certainly much better than the other ones listed in the C-C guidebook.

The kitchen was nice and clean, good filter coffee. Great breakfast although at R 70 definately expensive. You could however self cater in the nice kitchen or go out for breakfast at one of the many places in Windhoek. The good thing is that you have a choice.

We stayed in a fairly large outside room at the pool. Nice.

Sure, we stayed in a budget room and had to use the bathroom in the house, but it was'nt a hassle, and the bathroom was not as busy as that of most other backpackers.

Again, one has the option of an en suite bathroom, so again no complaints.

In Windhoek nowadays there is no excuse for a bacpacker style lodge that does not have cheap or free wifi available for guests. This is one drawbackof Rivendell, no wifi. . Stupid excuses does not work anymore. They should get it, as their so called "internet" means sitting in their reception and paying close to N$ 1.00 per minute.

Apart from that, Rivendell is by far the best backpacker/budget place to stay in Windhoek.

If you want air con, DSTV in the room, expensive linen etc, then go elsewhere and pay 3 times the price.

If you want good basics at an affordable price, then stay here.

Many thanks for your review, I just wanted to let everyone know that we now have WiFi internet! This has taken some time to set up through Telecom Namibia but we look forward to being able to offer this service from now onwards, and we hope that this will add even more value to our guests stay.

Best regards,
Charlotte
