We went to Hakos to have a very first time experience of stargazing. The farm is on a convenient 135 km drive from Windhoek and it is easy to find - just go C26 and find the road to Hakos a few kilometres before the Gamsberg pass.
Don't expect a traditional luxurious farm. This is much more homely. Rooms are comfortable with en-suite bathroom. We were able to get a room with four beds so there was room for the children as well. It was a little bit unusual to be seated at very big tables with room for up to twelve. But it also created a very homely atmosphere and with "everyone" at the same table the dinner-table conversation became very interesting.
We had asked for the "stargazing tour for beginners". The first evening this was a bit disappointing. It was held mostly in German although we were English-talking and the telescope was in the garden with trees and buildings hiding parts of the sky. Luckily we stayed another night and then the tour was out to the observatory with a beautiful sky stretching all around the horizon. We also got very nice opportunities to watch at different clusters and nebulosas and we were very happy with that evening.
Our hostess Waltraud was very caring and friendly, joined us for dinner and took us on a nice tour the last morning to see the different observatories in day-light.
Finally, Hakos is the perfect place to start if you want to climb the Gamsberg Mountain.
