“Homely atmosphere under the starts”
Reviewed October 13, 2012

We went to Hakos to have a very first time experience of stargazing. The farm is on a convenient 135 km drive from Windhoek and it is easy to find - just go C26 and find the road to Hakos a few kilometres before the Gamsberg pass.
Don't expect a traditional luxurious farm. This is much more homely. Rooms are comfortable with en-suite bathroom. We were able to get a room with four beds so there was room for the children as well. It was a little bit unusual to be seated at very big tables with room for up to twelve. But it also created a very homely atmosphere and with "everyone" at the same table the dinner-table conversation became very interesting.
We had asked for the "stargazing tour for beginners". The first evening this was a bit disappointing. It was held mostly in German although we were English-talking and the telescope was in the garden with trees and buildings hiding parts of the sky. Luckily we stayed another night and then the tour was out to the observatory with a beautiful sky stretching all around the horizon. We also got very nice opportunities to watch at different clusters and nebulosas and we were very happy with that evening.
Our hostess Waltraud was very caring and friendly, joined us for dinner and took us on a nice tour the last morning to see the different observatories in day-light.
Finally, Hakos is the perfect place to start if you want to climb the Gamsberg Mountain.

Room Tip: Because of the stargazing the farm is kept dark. Bring a torch to find your way between the rooms an...

Well we didn't actually stay here, but broke down and got towed here. What I can vouch for is the fantastically generous hospitality we were offered by the family when we arrived. They welcomed us (smelly, unwashed after bush camping for several days) even though they we closed for christmas holiday and having their own family celebration. We were made welcome, given coffee and treats, offered amenities, use of phone etc. In the end they even towed us back up the hill. Really, this family couldn't have been sweeter. Their farm is beautiful, views are incredible... and the indoor pool overlooks the spectacular mountains. I would definitely recommend this place based on our experience.

The Farm Hakos is in the middle of nowhere.
But this shouldn't scare people, as this is the nice thing of staying there. No traffic, no lights, the closest city being 150km far.
This is the Amateur Astronomer's heaven and you'll find a very delicious german cuisine too.
Rooms are excellent and the owners do their best to satisfy yuor needs.
Lunch and Dinner are very informal and it is nice to have the meals together with other fellows amateur astronomers and discuss about anything.
It is not suggested as a long stay for people not interested in astronomy as there is very few to do there, unless undertaking one of the organized tour by the farm.
Sunset view there is amazing and worth an overnight stay at this farm.
I would go there again....

This place is off the track on the Gamsberg Pass and is particularly a great place for amateur astronomers (has observatory) otherwise there is not a lot to do. The rooms are attractive and the gardens are very nice. The hosts were a bit distant at meals, but not unpleasant -- perhaps just an off day. The food was ok. Note that there is a library, a bar, and an indoor pool -- nice view for sunset. Look for Hartmann's Mountain zebra.
