Hotel Pension Steiner
Ranked #19 of 101 Windhoek B&B and Inns
Reviewed July 30, 2013

This is a standard motel style establishment that benefits from its proximity to the central business district of Windhoek. It is clean, functional, has secure parking and an adequate breakfast is included in the price. There is really nothing remarkable about Steiner and the room tariff reflects that. The rooms are just about big enough, the TV service is a standard free to air menu plus limited cable. The internet is available at an hourly rate and is quite efficient around the swimming pool area However, the signal in our room was non existent.
What you cannot deny is, Steiner is an easy stroll to the CBD and compared to other establishments within the same radius of the centre of Windhoek, Steiner presents excellent value for money. If you're on a budget, you can't go wrong here.
Steiner is also within easy walking distance of NICE, the Namibian Institute for Culinary Education, but also one of finest restaurants in Namibia. The restaurant is run by the tertiary students of NICE (see my separate review).
An added bonus of Steiner is that less than 100 metres from the front gate is an excellent fresh food market which boasts a smorgasbord of fresh fruit, nuts and other delicate temptations. A great antidote after weeks on the road on a staple fare of African red meat game cremated on hot coals.

Room Tip: They all looked about the same size

This pension is very well situated in the heart of Windoeck. Rooms are cleaned but very hot.
Services are ok except that the people at the reception are really not friendly. If you need nothing you can ask..

Not only it is in the center of Windhoek, everything is in walking distance, but also it's a very nice and comfortable place to stay. The garden with the pool is unique and also the friendly and helpful staff is really outstanding. I had my husband sick as we arrived there and I don't know what I would have done without the help of the staff. They looked after our girl, helped us to find a good hospital and doctor, drove us even there and supported me so much in any possible way. Thanks again very much!

Room Tip: Rooms Nr 1-5 are on ground floor, but a little calmer. Only you have not more than one window there...

Hotel Pension Steiner was recommended to us by a family friend who has been to Windhoek quite a few times, however, the not all the reviews on Trip Advisor looked fantastic, so we didn't really know what to expect when we got there. We needn't have worried though because it was perfect for what we needed.

Its central location meant that getting to and from the airport was very straightforward - we just hired a shuttle from Namibia Tours (Japie was our driver) who picked us up and dropped us off right at our door. It was close to where we hired our camping vehicle too which we picked up the next day from Asco Car Hire - a great outfit which provided us with a fantastic vehicle for our camping trip round Namibia. Their website may be a bit basic but they have about 40 vehicles for lease - most of which are fully camping equipped - quite a slick operation for a very reasonable price.

We stayed in the 5 bed family room where we each had a single bed to ourselves. Although the one bathroom between the 5 of us, which only had a small bath and basin, wasn't ideal, it was clean and tidy and came with all the basic amenities you'd expect from a motel: hairdryer, small fridge, kettle, TV, air con etc. It was perfect for a place to sleep which is all that we wanted before heading off on our big adventure.

The breakfast consisted of eggs, bacon, cereals, yoghurt, bread and spreads, juice, coffee. It hit the spot and the hosts were very friendly. The pool was a welcome relief on our return (we stayed there on our last night before flying back to South Africa too) after driving all the way from Etosha. It was pristine and the poolside bar was very convenient.

The hotel is also close to the famous Joe's Beer House where we ate at on our last night. Our hosts organised a cab to and from the restaurant for us, which was helpful.

We would stay here again if we came back on the same sort of budget. It's not the Ritz by any means but it was perfect for what we needed it to be: clean, safe, secure and easy to get to.

Have no idea about the quality of similar hostelry in Windhoek for sake of comparison, only that the Steiner is located a short walk from the center and all conveniences and amenities of this city. The facility is comprised of a secure compound with the rooms laid out in a manner ensuring quiet and negligible street noise. In room 16, everything was properly functioning with an acceptable comfort standard in this price range ($70 USD). Well-stocked, fairly priced minibar, limited TV channels, safe, and $4usd/hour internet. Don't know about heating as this was summer visit, no AC, strong fan although was a bit stuffy if windows not opened. The pool area as noted is very tranquil, pleasant. Good breakfast. Very committed staff, albeit in the German manner and style. Would look no further than here for repeat visit to Windhoek.

Small Hotel next to town center with a nice garden and a swimming pool. A place to relaxe and to take part at the night life of WINDHOEK. Everything is easy to reach and the staff of the Hotel will help you all the time.
You feel like in a family if you want and you have the peace if you want. The rooms are nice and clean. Good breakfast and good service in all matters. A place I have been already three times and I would go again and again. A place to start a journey through NAMIBIA.

The only good things this hotel has going for it are the location (a 3 minute walk from the main street) and the staff. In all other respects it is not good: the walls are paper-thin; the only bathroom supply was an unwrapped bar of soap; some of the lights in the room did not work, nor did the heat; the shower had almost no water pressure or hot water; and although there were extra pillows in the closet there were no extra pillowcases. (We stayed here on both ends of our trip to Namibia, in 2 different rooms.)
