“Great wildlife experience; rooms not so good.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 30, 2012

We stayed for two nights on the 'starter/finisher' package, which proved excellent value for money. The game drives were good, and the cheetah and leopard experiences were as close as we got to these creatures in Namibia. They are not totally wild, in that the farm feeds them and you watch at feeding time. There is also a pet cheetah with only three legs that we were able to walk with. Food was good. Our only criticisms were that the young lady who we first met was not very welcoming and the rooms in colonial house are rather tired and ours did not contain a double bed as stated on the website. The guides were very good.

Dear Dave,
Thank you for your time to comment on Düsternbrook Safari Guest Farm in such a contructive way. I must say this type of criticism is the best as it is balanced and one knows exactly where to improve. I comment now only in feb 2014 and some points have been addresses already. In colonial house we have two dbl rooms one has a dbl bed and the other did not. We have now added another room to the room you had and there is now a dbl bed. In fact it is a family room so the sgl beds are for the kids. We also added a new reception in the middle of the yard with new or more friendly staff. But the young lady you are referring to is very valuable as he is very correct in your work so she still does the reservation and book keeping.
We will also address the rooms so that all get a facelift and will look hopefully than better.
Thank you about the positive remarks about the different game drives and the quality of the guides which was a weekness in the past but we have addressed the issue and I am happy to get a positive feed back from you.
kind regards
Johann Vaatz

We stayed by the river at one of the campsites. There is an outdoor shower & toilet facility which fits the environment. There was no water in the shower but as we were only staying one night and the only people there it did not matter too much. At night you can hear the animals walking down the river which is very cool. The bar & pool area is lovely with great views of the river. We did the Leopard & cheetah feeding which was a great way to see the animals up close.

Hi Cricketgirl from Darwin,
It is a time ago that you made your comment on Düsternbrook Farm, but thank you for your time. Sorry to give feed back only now, march 2014, but I only recently rejoined Tripadvisor.
Sorry about no water at the outdoor shower , that should not be!! I think the problem is the following. In between is another tap which we close because sometimes the baboons open the tap at the shower and than we loose all the water. This tap should be opened from my staff if someone is at the campsite and that was not done. I am very sorry about that.
Thank you one more time about your positive remark and that you enjoyed your stay and recommend this campsite. I think you had the best campsite no 10 and out there you are even more close to nature with ther best view.
kind regards and all the best

We stayed for one night at Dusternbrook Guest Farm and went on both the cheetah and leopard drive and the game drive. We were amazed how close the cats came to the vehicle, giving superb photo opportunities and we saw lots of different animals on the game drive including kudu, giraffe, gemsbok & eland.
Three of us stayed in the two Felsenhaus rooms, which were lovely - beautifully furnished and very spacious and comfortable with a lovely view from the terrace. The other two in our party stayed in a luxury tent, which was cozy with a superb stone-built ensuite. It was very cold at night (winter) but we were given hot water bottles to take to bed with us to make sure we were warm enough. Dinner was in the main house (again because it was winter), with all the guests eating at one large table. The food was delicious, as was breakfast the next day with lots of choice.
Dusternbrook would be a perfect place for a first night in Namibia, if you have no need to stay in Windhoek itself, or for a last night.

Dear SalHP from London,
Although it is so long ago and your review so positive there was actually no need to comment on your feed back. Trip advisor recommends that we react on reviews. Thank you very much taking the time to comment this farm. I am happy you enjoyed it and that you took the time to share it with other readers.

We stayed on the camping-site of this guest farm for two nights at the end of a three week tour round lovely Namibia. The setting is ideal in the mountains, close to Windhoek and Okahandja.
There are different possibilities to entertain yourself during your stay (game drive, walking trails, cheetah feeding, horse riding).
The dinner is with all the guests at the same table, together with owner Hans.
We're certainly going to stay there when we return to Namibia.

We had to cross three times the same river to get there (heavy rainfall the day before we got there). Very difficult with a 2x4 vehicle! Beautifull setting, great food and company, excellent service. Only the cat viewing is somehow poor, as the cats really behave like in a zoo, even worse during the feeding.

Dear Strahlerpiero,
Thank you for your comment and that you took the time for this review. I can understand that you feel it was like in zoo, the questions is however how do you want to do it differently? The animals get so used the human being that they are not tame but get habituated and I would not know how to avoid that. If you know wildlife than you will agree you cannot offer something like this every day in free nature ..it is simply impossible, but people still like to see the animals..and part of the exercise is to sensitise people what beautiful animals they are and that something should be done to protect them. Not so? And I am not talking about some NGO's trying to safe animals, that is not a global solution. Globally something should be done just think about who and what is killing our nature and natural resources? I am sure more money is spent on advertising a new car model than being invested to safe our wildlife an nature...so not more and more and more, rather safe what we got.
kind regards

This simple but very pleasant guest farm is situated at the end of an 18km gravel/sand road off the B1 highway. Construction on the main building began in 1908; later additions in local natural materials have kept to the original style. The room was basic but comfortable and clean. There is a nice outdoor pool and seating and area bar in an African style building with a thatched roof. From the terrace in front of the main building one has a nice view across the valley and can watch gemsbok, warthogs and hyrax as they go about their business. Meals were served in the dining room of the farm house and hosted by the owner; food comprised good home cooking.
The guest farm offers game drives with a sun-downer and horse riding (we saw gemsbok, kudu, wilderbeest, giraffes and steenbok). The horse riding could benefit from some new tack but the horses were obviously well treated and very well fed. There is also the possibility to watch a leopard and several cheetahs being fed. These are kept in two, large (think in terms of hectares) enclosures. Observation is from an open vehicle so you get a close up experience – the leopard is but a few metres away, whereas the cheetahs are literally right next to the vehicle. It certainly gets the adrenalin going!

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 2, 2009

Dusternbrook is a pretty little old farmhouse, with rooms in outlying buildings. It is conveniently located 40 or so kms out of Windhoek. Our room was comfortable enough but extremely dusty - there were so many little ornaments and things about (which looked very nice) that it would be impossible to clean properly.

The food was just okay (but expensive in comparison to other places that we stayed). As it was at the start of our trip, we did all the game drives on offer, however they were a bit of a waste of time. The leopard and cheetah feeding involved a short drive to the enclosures where the driver threw out a some meat and we watched them eat. The afternoon game drive and sundowner was by far the worst game drive we have ever been on. The driver had absolutely no knowledge of the game. We had to spot the animals and ask him to stop, which he would eventually do (so that he could see the animals with no regard for the poor people in the thrid row of the Landrover who couldn't see anything). The driver on the morning game drive was slightly better, but not much. The other obvious thing about Dusternbrook is that they use the game on their farm as meat for the restaurant, which we don't have a problem with, but which means that any game that you do happen to spot takes of at a rapid rate as soon as they hear the sound of the car. We saw more game at closer range ourselves on the drive in. I asked one of the drivers a question about the huge weavers nests that they have in the trees and was rudely pointed in the direction of the 'information' building, which contains little information. They do have some pretty walks on the property which would be very pleasant to do with more time. They also have very pleasant little camping ground which I would have prefered over a room. The staff were pleasant enough but not overly friendly. Bottom line for us is that Dusternbook is an okay place to stay outside the city after a long flight but you could do better.

Dear Artellphoto,
It is many, many years ago that you have been here and I only respond now to your comment. In anyway thank you for the to comment Düsternbrook. Although you critisize a lot your overall judgement is still ok. Thank you.
Now many years later we have very much improved and gave attention to all points you have mentioned. Thank you it helped and it is quite difficult to attend to all points at once but I think over the years we managed quit well.
One more time even if it is so long ago thank you very much, your comments helped me to get better to the advantage of other clients.
All the best and kind regards
