A canyon worth a visit, always very hot unless you go in their winter. Then with a permit you can walk the length of ti if you have five days to spare. Well worth the effort and the resort at the end allows you to relax and savor the experience you have just completed.

My lodge, Canon lodge well reccomend, organises flights to the canyon. I found the early morning flight great as you see all the colour of sunrise differing shades ect. wonderful. Unforgettable

Distances are huge out here but it is worth making the effort to visit the East and West sides of the Canyon. It is a spectacle any time of day but is really something special at sunrise and sunset. We stayed at Ai Ais on our first night - wish we hadn't. Canon Road House is nearer the Canyon, is a more pleasant location and has better food - but it is simple. Hobas camp site seems clean well run and is on the access road to the East side of the Canyon. On the East side Fish River Lodge is totally unique. Contemporary, isolated, right on the rim of the Canyon with excellent food and tip top service. Quite incredible.

It is scary that these canyons are caused by flash floods, and that if you are anywhere near when the water arrives then you could be a gonner

The Fish River Canyon in the south of Namibia is often listed as the second largest canyon in the world after the Grand Canyon in the USA. The Fish River starts near Mariental in the north and ends in the Oranje River in the south. The canyon is about 160 km long, up to 27 km wide and up to 550 m deep. There are several lodges in the area and with those as a base you can do hikes, with or without mules. I have only visited the canyon from the Fish River Lodge on the western side. The other lodges are further south on the eastern side. From the Fish River Lodge on the western rim you can go on day car tours all the way down to the river in the bottom of the canyon.
Fish River Canyon is breathtakingly beautiful. Its creation started some 350 millions years ago and you can see traces of that process today. Some of the worlds oldest rock formations can be seen here.
