Nice hotel with cosy garden and good cafe. Stayed in the rooms close to the seafront. Great view, but very bad smell, only SA-plugs for electric equip and very difficult to lock the door to the veranda. Nice and proffesional staff.

This hotel was a major disappointment! But first the positives: main building quite attractive, staff friendly, good service in bar and restaurant, excellent food in their fine dining restaurant and lastly nice pool area. What makes me give this a two is the horrible room! We booked a standard room that turned out to be situated not in the main building but in another building adjacent to the pool. This was very different than the main building and more reminiscent of a run down motel. Tired and gloomy as was our rooms. One of our rooms lacked a safe (had been removed), and both rooms had empty minibars (even though we alerted the staff several times it remained so) and lacked both hairdriers and coffe making fascilities. The worst however, was that one of the rooms had a lopsided bed and smelled of raw sewage! To charge these prices for a motel style room is simply outrageous!

Room Tip: Make sure it's in the main building!

Me and my husband went to Mozambique for our honeymoon. Since our flight was coming in and out of Maputo, we decided to spend 2 nights at the Polana Hotel (first one on the arrival and the second on the departure).
We had some friends who had previously stayed there so we already had some good reviews. We thought we knew what we were getting into but somehow the Polana managed to surpass our expectations.
While on honeymoon, there are some things you already expect from a five star hotel: the upgrades, the flowers, the champagne… however the Polana staff took it to another level.
Our room was excellent (the view was amazing!), the restaurants (both the Delagoa and the Esplanada – I believe that´s their names…) had really good food. We didn´t tried the lunch or dinner buffets (except the breakfast one which was great) – but the à la carte options were very good (I particular recommend the Fillet Mignon). The location couldn´t be better (there is this really cool market right around the corner by the way), I could go on and on… but what really made the difference for us was the staff: very friendly and extremely helpful!
If you are thinking of going to Maputo – do not hesitate: the Polana is the place to stay.

We stayed here at the suggestion of a friend in South Africa. Unfortunately it was a mistake in our opinion. Once we arrived at the airport, our pre-arranged transport o the hotel was no where to be seen, so we ended up taking a taxi. The hotel is a beautiful old style hotel from the 30s with well appointed rooms. I had previously asked asked for an ocean view room and they gave us a small room overlooking a skylight on the non-beach side. After a lot of discussion with the hotel staff we got a nicer room with a partical ocean view. The main hotel has been refurburshed and the cliff side rooms were in need of restoration as they were dark and dank smelling. We went to dinner at the hotel and decided not to partake in the buffet. After 2+ weeks on the road were were buffeted out and wanted to sit down for a regular dinner and not have kids running around and grabbing all the buffet food. The waiter thought we were crazy but we ordered the prawns, what we came here for. It took 40 minutes to get 4 very large prawns with piri-piri sauce (very spicy) and drawn garlic butter. The next night we ordered the same thing, it only took 35 minutes. They were great! Unfortunately during our 2 night stay we had the two kids from hell, running throughout the hotel, screaming, and grabbing everything from the buffet tables and putting it back. The staff let them run around and even encouraged their behavior. The next day we decided to head to the beach. The desk manager looked at us and suggested against it. Actually, he suggested if we were to leave the hotel we should take little money, copies of our passports and nothing else, even our point and shoot cameras. That was not a good thing. There was a casino that used to be part of the hotel that moved down the street on the beach. They told us there was a complementary shuttle at noon so we came back then, only to be told it would be at 18:00. We found the staff knew little about what was going on although they were very nice and spoke decent English. Nothing is cheap in Maputo, even a taxi is 6-12US to go a mile or two one way. The drinks were alo overpriced and they added a service charge to everything. We ended up staying in the hotel feeling like a prisoner. Luckily they had a nice bar and a great pool that we lounged around. But we were so happy to leave! Would not go back.

Room Tip: Go for an ocean view in the main hotel.

I did not really stay here, I just spent a long day and night (sleep over) with friends who were staying here. Very nice hotel, good food, nice breakfast variety, room service is very quick and efficient, pool was very clean, I swam because the pool was inviting, not because I wanted to swim
