Sundown Guest House Maputo

The little hotel was constantly fully booked, but my business partner got us (couple) one night in the old building. The manager did its best to find additional room for later dates.
The place is easy to find, next to the park in front of the Frelimo headquarters. Our standard double room was not very large but suitable for the rate given. Two chairs and a table and a very large wardrobe. Complementary water boiler and coffee-thee. The view from the rear balcony was not very exiting but we came only to sleep anyhow. Mosquito nets and an airco if you wanted. Clean complete bathroom with shower in the tub.
Breakfast excellent in spacious room, linked with outside sitting areas.
Internet worked OK but not high speed, good for mail download.
Few channels on the TV. Parking of most cars on the street in front. Any taxi in town costs Meticas 150 and are called by telephone.
For next time I just have to book earlier.

Room Tip: book early

My friend and I stayed at the Sundown guesthouse in January 2011. The rooms were nice and clean and the place although in a somewhat dilapidated part of town, the rooms were modern and well equipped. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, and the location was very centrally located. Only problem was that when coming back from a night out, it was confusing to find the place and many people did not know where it was. The guesthouse did help with a taxi service and were happy to provide any feedback.
You get an excellent value for money and the staff make it a stellar place to stay.
Will definitely go back when I am in Maputo.

Stayed here in 2007, was happy to find it was still on the go in 2011. Staff are still as friendly and helpful, breakfasts still as good. Was given a room in the new building! Very nice indeed although the old building is probably just as good. Only drawback for me is it's not close to the city centre and taxis are required (but not expensive!) to get to the decent restaurants. Otherwise a great place to stay on business, holiday or just passing through.

I have visited Maputo many times, and whilst the city has a number of excellent high class hotels, they are also high price! I am sorry I didn't discover the Sundown Guesthouse sooner - it is clean, quiet, and reasonably priced - ideal for a business trip. Fairly fast wifi is provided free, there is a well stocked honesty bar, and the staff are unfailingly helpful with organising taxis (and I believe they are as helpful with arranging onward travel, excursions etc - although I didn't have firsthand experience of this!) I will definitely stay again.

I would give the rooms/cleanliness a higher rating but the bathroom had either mold or a mold like stain all around the 1/4 of the wall. But other than that the room was very clean.

Large room with a comfortable queen size mattress and mosquito nets. TV with 2 channels (CNN and local TV). Honestly bar is awesome for late night drinks. Quiet area of Maputo.

Internet is not bad for Africa. Wifi.

Use the taxi driver suggested by the hotel to avoid ripp-offs (there are no meters in Maputo). Zambi for dinner is pretty good FYI.

This was hotel is great for business travelers who have business in the area. There is not much in that area as far as sights of interest, so this is not a good choice if you plan is to get to know Mozambique's culture and sights.

We had newly renovated rooms which were very clean. The high speed internet was a bit complicated (they have lots of connections and you need to pick the right one), but once I got it linked up it was the fastest internet connection I had during my months travels.

Breakfast was nothing exciting, but there were choices and no one in our group went hungry.

The person they arranged to take us to the boarder took us to the wrong boarder crossing (he didn't really speak english nor could he read a map which made it very difficult to communicate that we were going the wrong place until we called the hotel and got them to explain it to him). I am sure that, thanks to our experience, that won't happen again (in fairness, I don't think they normally arrange cars to drive you to the boarder... the same guy did a good job in dropping us off and picking us up from dinner the night before).

The hotel facilities are clean but fairly basic. The rooms in the new annexe are good; modern, clean and quiet, but in the older main part were noisy and shabby; there were no mosquito nets provided, so make sure you take your own as you will need it. Overall, decent value for money; good, central and safe location, helpful, friendly staff but make sure that you request one of the newer rooms next door.
