“Business oriented in Maputo”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 19, 2012

Maputo's Hotel Avenida is a modern, business oriented hotel with most of the expected amenities for a 5-star facility. Drawbacks are lack of free Internet access, very high prices in the restaurant, and a small rooftop swimming pool. The hotel has an airport shuttle but charges about $20 for the trip (their van has limited space for luggage, so you may end up with suitcases on the seat next to you).

Because of the tight urban location there is no outdoor space to speak of (except on the roof terrace), and traffic noise at the front of the hotel can be annoying. Rooms are well furnished with comfortable beds, but the minibar is empty - you have to request it to be stocked. The bathroom has a good supply of toiletries and maid service is efficient.

There are many much less expensive cafes and restaurants in the area, and during my stay I never used the restaurant other than for breakfast (included in my room price). The hotel doesn't offer anything quick and inexpensive (sandwiches or pizza) which is a big drawback. Maybe converting the underutilized high-end menu to something more accessible would be worth management's consideration. The breakfast choices are excellent so they have the potential to do much better during the rest of the day.

Overall this is not a bad choice, and the hotel was quite busy during my stay, but the prices across the board are very high (I paid a corporate rate of about $240/night with breakfast but not including Internet). Prices in general seem to be rising rapidly in Mozambique which is in the early stages of a major boom due to discovery of natural gas. More mid-range hotel options would be one welcome outcome of this development.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front face the ocean, but also some very rundown apartment blocks just across the stree...

The rooms are well appointed, spacious and clean with good amenities.
The only problem I experienced was the fact that they advertise a WiFi facility (with step-by-step instructions on how to access the the facility) in the room, which does not exist. At 5 o'clock in the morning, you do not feel like going down to get a voucher!
Breakfast is great!

Room Tip: Beautiful views from the rooms higher up. I stayed on the on the 7th floor and had a great view ove...

Avenida offered a large, light and comfortable room with an excellent bathroom, a very good mattress, and flawless wireless internet access. The breakfast buffet was extensive and, like internet, it was included in my price. My - corporate - rate wasn't cheap, but it was lower than Polana or Cardoso.

The hotel doesn't have much character or a sea view, but the location is central, with several restaurants a short stroll away, including a so-so Thai place right next door with quick service and take-out. There's plenty of seating in the light, airy lobby and neighbouring bar, although this space didn't seem to be airconditioned during my visit, making it very hot.

On check-in there was grousing about my arrival date (the hotel had it wrong), then about my credit card - an irritating start, but subsequently overridden by the quality of other aspects of this hotel.

The check-in process was exceptionally slow (30 mins+) with no reason offered for the confusing process. Had booked 5 nights and had to pay all upfront. Booked room not available so upgraded for 1 night to a suite. This could have been done better! We were told we would have to check out the next morning because this for 1 night only - could they have stressed this more?? It was $US500/night and really not worth it - even the upgraded suite. The suite was stuffy and musky and the windows do not open. The power went out in the night making it unbearable. On checking out the next morning, found there was no further booking anyway so went down the road to be welcomed at the Polana.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with windows that open otherwise it's very claustrophobic.

A very good hotel; similar experience to staying at a good Marriott in US. Everything is clean. Food is good. Gym is large. Roof pool is nice, with great view. Internet in every room. Bank and restaurants nearby. Food and some services (e.g. laundry) a little on the pricey side, but efficient.

Let me be clear: I am a fan of the Cardossa. So when this was full, I was booked into the Avenida. My colleagues generally stay here so I was curious but sceptical, primarily because of the price and the central location.

The rooms are good, functional, large and clean. The Internet connection works. Check-in and out was quick.

In fact, it was hard to fault. It just lacked the aging glamour and renewed energy I have come to enjoy about Maputo, that I find in the possibly less well performing but nevertheless more alluring Cardossa.

Leaving the hotel in the morning, I searched the car radio for some company en route to Matola. LM radio appeared. It was disorganised, a little amateur but so much fun. I thought, if you like LM radio, you'll probably coincide with my view, wanting something more from Maputo than just a very functional five star hotel: something to rekindle the wistful stories of your parents; something to make you think that Tiny Rowlands bullied you the best view in the city.

Room Tip: Unplug the in-room fridge before going to bed.

This is ok hotel in Maputo, conveniently located (check out Mundos restaurant close buy) and rooms are quite big. The Bar is also nice as well as gym. However, overall room furniture is a bit outdated with old tube TVs.
