“Cast Away by Maputo”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 8, 2013

This island is just a paradise nearby Maputo. Well in actual facts it is much more about having such a beautiful island only 2 hours away from the country capital. I can only imagine what a life could be like if you enjoy nature. I would personally be there every weekend if I was working in Maputo.

“Day trip to Inhaca Island”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 3, 2013

I loved the island but a word of caution - rather spend a night or two rather than in and out same day. There are 2 ferries to the island. The government ferry is half the price of the private Vodacom ferry but leaves around 8:30, arrives around 10:30 and returns at 1pm which gives you no time to see the island. The Vodacom ferry arrives earlier and leaves at 3pm which is enough time to have a walk around, grab lunch and head back to Maputo. What they don't tell you on the government boat is that the ticket is one way, they only take meticals and you have to pay 20 meticals for a row boat from the ferry to the island.

Once you get onto the island there are locals who can show you around, at a fee. We found it helpful because we were there for such a short time.

Next time, I'll book in for the night

“Inhaca is amazing. It doesn't matter where you stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 31, 2013

Inhaca Island combines so many of Mozambique's natural wonders in one place - you get a coastline akin to Bazaruto or Santa Carolina in some places, amazing natural forests and then desert island (Ilha da Portuguesa), mangrove lined shoreline, whale watching, lighthouse, you name it.
There are three drawbacks: 1) the ferry doesn't run every day limiting you to 3 day weekend or else too short a stay for too long a trip 2) everything is much more expensive than the mainland, even the bananas and 3) a lot of the accommodation isn't much to write home about.
Having said all that, who cares? You'll spend most of your time on day trips (there are loads of people dying to drive you around the island at a price). Visit Santa Maria - it is simply sublime. Inhaca town itself is infested with crows and lacks charm but they have an amazing wood fired bread bakery!

“Could be better”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 23, 2013

Expected crystal blue and toques beaches but no. It was dull and boring. Ended up walking around the beach with nothing exciting on the side. I expected to see more and have cocktails by the beach. There was nothing of that sort.

“Amazing islands close to Maputo”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 5, 2013

Not very far from Maputo - around 40km - and easily reachable by a daily boat, the Inhaca Island and its smaller neighbor Portuguese Island are an amazing place to be, relax and get tanned close to Maputo. Tottaly worth stopping and full of interesting sights and beautiful beaches.
