“A nice old house falling down.”

How did this house get on TripAdvisor? It must have been nice when it was still standing but there are hundreds of colonial houses just like it throughout Maputo. This one just in a little bit more ruin.

This house once housed the secret police of Mozambique and it is said to be haunted because of the torture the prisoners being held there recieved!! The house has long been abandoned and it has recently been slated to renovation!! It is an impressive building but the years of neglect are evident!! You are not allowed on the property any longer as the renovation have started but it can be added to a quick stop on the way to the Park of Artisans near by!!

The building is currently being restored, but having said that the brick wall was put around it a year or two ago and still no work appears to have begun. The building is famed for what alegedly happened there during Maputo's tumultuous years and is definitely work driving by if you are mobile. Don't make a special trip, however, as Maputo is full of classic architecture especially in the baixa, not so much in this area.

Vila Algrave is arguably one of the most beautiful buildings in Maputo- a city widely regarded as one of Africa's most appealing capital cities. An especially elegant villa, it is an impressive building even in its present, neglected condition.

I was pleased to read recently that the building we saw as a near-derelict building will now be carefully restored. The President of Mozambique himself has announced the project in recent months. Years of neglect and abandonment are not the worse that this building has seen, however. During the 1960s and 1970s, the villa was the home of the Portuguese Secret Police, and it is known that many people independence fighters were tortured here. It is to the credit of the Mozambicans that they have chosen to repair this building despite its sinister past.
