Afrin Prestige Hotel
Ranked #8 of 23 Hotels in Maputo
Reviewed November 11, 2012

I have just completed a two night stay at Afrin Prestige Hotel in Maputo. I had read many good reviews on Tripadvisor about the hotel before my stay, however, i found too many problems with the hotel to offer a favourable review.

Firstly, on the positive side, i must say that the hotel room size is very generous, which with the added bonus of a small kitchenette is a great advantage. The hotel is also well situated next to a mall, and also has many restaurants within walking distance.

The negative aspects of Afrin hotel are:

1. The reception staff are miserable and unpleasant. I never saw one of them smile in 3 days! Their customer skills are very poor.
2. The hotel wi-fi is pathetic. It did not work once throughout my stay, even thou they promised it would be fixed on the first day.
3. The television sets in the rooms are so small, i literally had to sit one metre away from it just to be able to see anything. I honestly have not seen a smaller TV in a hotel room anywhere.
4. The hotel keeps some parrots in a small garden on the ground floor. Each morning from about 5 a.m. the parrots start making a huge noise, which is impossible to ignore and sleep through. I could hear it five floors up, so i can only imagine what the people on the lower floors must have been going through.
5. The tiny lifts in the hotel keep getting stuck, and can only carry 3 people at a time. So basically if there is a group of people ahead of you, you could have to wait a while to get to your room.

I have stayed at the Polana hotel a few times, and it is a far better option than Afrin. In my opinion it is not value for money for the rate they charge. Furthermore, if you are planning to visit Maputo on holiday, please remember it is one of the most corrupt places in Africa. I was stopped by policemen soliciting bribes on five occasions in three days! Everywhere you go people a trying to rip you off as soon as they find out you're a foreigner.

This must be one of the better hotels in Maputo. At more than 200 USD per night for a standard room it is definitely expensive but that is the case for the whole of Maputo and it is not possible to complain about that. There were few people at the restaurant when we had dinner after 9:00 but the food was superb. The rooms are big and neat but there was no couch or armchair except the stiff chair by the table which is not comfortable at all. I thought they took out the couch and forgot to return it because a round table was sitting in the middle of the room. The TV set is very small for a room of that size and the volume button on the remote control was not working. So I had to walk to the TV set every time I wanted to turn the volume up or down. Welcome to the 60s. Apparently they also gave me a room on the smokers floor without even asking me (the floor had the distinct smell of smoke which is not bad but some people may find unappealing). All in all a nice place at a central location but there certainly is a need to pay more attention to detail. One cant have this kind of seemingly minor inconveniences after paying 200 USD per night.

This hotel is one of the best and great value for money. Huge comfortable rooms, well serviced and location right next to Maputo shopping centre and food court offers you a choice of eating experiances. Excellant coffee on site and even the breakfast offers a varied selection.
Although I was on a business trip its definately a hotel I would re-visit on holiday. Its perfect location close to the waterfront allows you to stroll around. it also offers a lovely pool/ small gym/beauty parlour.

Room Tip: Choose rooms on the higher floors to avoid any noise from lower floors activity( pool/gym)

The staff is incredible, the food is ok, but the service is excellent. The rooms are the biggest I ve seen in Mozambique and the cleanliness is top notch, the bar is very cool. Loved it, but I would advise to eat outside.

We stayed in to top floor of the hotel and had the most unbelieveble view.Staff members were extremely helpfull and could speak english. The prices were really good for the 5* rating the hotel has. Food and room service was up to standard and the swimmingpool area (2nd floor) was an experience on its own.

I noticed this new hotel at a reasonable price (140 EUR) in the web offerings and tried it out for the first time. I was not disappointed. Let me say that this price range and the comfort you expect from it, is not well taken care of in Maputo..
The property is big and well designed with available parking space: the guarded parking lot on the side is freely accessible for the guests in addition to the 16 spaces directly in front of the hotel. There is quite a lot of art displayed in the public spaces of the hotel and this makes it interesting. Of course you won't find there the atmosphere of a Mozaïka guest house or a Villa das Mangas, but the smoothness and comfort of the Afrin make up for that.
Rooms are big and have all a large balcony with view on the river or Maputo bay for the upper floors. Nice furniture is available including cozy sofa and outdoor easy chairs and furniture on the balcony. The wifi did not work, but cabled ethernet was set-up in the room by the nice IT guy. That way reasonably fast xfer of data was possible.
The pool is on the tiny side, so it is not very attractive for swimming, but nice place to hang around for a few beers.
Breakfast is a treat; you would easily confuse it for a lunch given the dishes available at the buffet.
Note the vicinity of the "costa" allowing nice joggings on the waterfront.
Unfortunately I lost my bathrobe as it was mistakenly taken by the maid as an hotel item for washing. I could not recuperate it in time before leaving...

The hotel is beautiful, brand new. The art pieces in the lobby gives it a special style.
The staff was friendly and considered. They helped us with some issued we had to solve, and were really concerned about helping us.

The rooms, oh! How to describe them?! Huge, modern, comfortable, with great balconies and a nice kitchen service. Everything is great, the bed, the sofa, the tv, etc.

The swimming pool is great, the terrace and the sauna too. There is a gym we didn't use but also looked brand new! They have a spa -which is of course not included in the cost of the room- but is a good option and you don't have to move from the hotel.
Breakfast was very good.

The location is good, near the Shopping Centre and you can easily move from there, by taxi or walking.

An incredible place in Maputo.
