We spent our last dinner in Mauritius with Jose at his home / restaurant and it was the most lovely evening. While we ate at many great restaurants during our trip at our resorts (we stayed at the St. Regis, Westin, and Shanti Maurice), this meal was by far our favorite.

We were the only people there that night and it was really like having a family meal. Jose invited us in and we ate delicious samosas in his living room. Then adjourned to the porch for an incredible crab soup and fish curry. We got to talk to Jose and learn all about his fascinating life and ask him the questions we had about Mauritius.

The food is out of this world. Jose studied culinary arts in Paris and had two Mauritian restaurants there before he moved back and that level of incredible food was felt.

Only tip is that it's a little hard to find at night and there's no parking lot. So if you have a car, just know you can park across the street near the beach.

We had a very nice evening at Face a la Mer , a table d'hote meal hosted by Jose. We were driving past the night before and arranged the dinner for the following evening - for evening meals you need a day in advance whereas for lunch it is open without prior reservation.

We started with an aperitif ( rum cocktail) and samosas in the sitting room and pleasant conversation. For the meal we sat on the terrace, nicely cooled by the ocean breeze . We started with a delicious couscous with coriander, tomato, avocado and smoked marlin slices. To follow we had a nicely cooked local fish (licorne - unicorn fish) in a tomato sauce with local spices , together with a typical Mauritian vegetable- calebasse , rice , and a cucumber carrot salad. To finish we had a nice moelleux aux chocolate with a strawberry sauce and vanilla ice cream. Jose is a great chef , with plenty of experience from his time in his restaurants in Paris.

Besides the enjoyable food , it was nice spending time with Jose sharing conversations over the meal about a variety of topics - a pleasant evening.

It is very convenient if you are staying in the Le Morne hotels , it is just in the Le Morne village less than 10 minutes away. For contact I've attached the business card to this review.

This is not a hotel, a bed and breakfast, and should be reserved. You better dont just come around and expect to have lunch...The owner is a superb cook though. The rooms are nothing fancy but more than decent and spotlessly clean.I have been there three times and if B & B could be rated, Face a la mer deserves 5 stars.
