“Awesome experience ever! ”

While attending the City of Stars Festival, I enjoyed every bit of my stay at Latitude 13 degrees.

I loved the rooms, the food, especially the fish over lunch, and the hospitality in general. Special thanks to Alicia and Selina for the kindness and hospitality.

I would come back again and again.

Latitude is an excellent option for Lilongwe. The rooms are spacious and clean and the food is delcious. The staff go out of their way to help you.

Yes we had some issues with the water pressure and sometimes orders took slightly longer to arrive that you'd hope for, but this is Africa and not everything is within the control of the hotel!

. Happy to recommend.

Room Tip: I preferred the upstairs rooms with the balcony and view of the garden as I found them lighter and m...

Our experience during our one night stay unfortunately did not match that of other reviewers. At the end of a 3 week trip around Malawi we arrived at the hotel close to 5 pm only to be told that the room was not ready and would be another 10 minutes. Noting how tired we looked after our 7 hour drive, we were placed in a first floor room (spacious, clean, well appointed but dark) overlooking the garden. The darkness of the room became more of a problem when the blinds were drawn in the evening for privacy since there were people around the garden area who could see inside. Noise is also a serious issue- every sound echoed loudly on the concrete floor on the landing and noise from the downstairs "reception" area travels up to the first floor so you can hear everything taking place at the foot of the stairs (which leads to the main entrance so you can hear all the people traipsing in and out). Well after dinner, the noise from a group congregated in the garden (we were later told by other guests that this included some staff members but can't say if this was so) chatting/laughing very loudly was extremely disturbing when trying to sleep.

Dinner was one of the high points of the stay. The garden setting is lovely and the meal itself was tasty and nicely presented (with some helpful suggestions from our server). Service, though a bit spotty (certain orders forgotten, rather long delay for others), was overall pleasant.

Breakfast the following morning was sadly a disaster (expectations having been set somewhat high after dinner). There appeared to be insufficient staff who were clearly overwhelmed by the 5 tables of guests. Everything was characterised by delay - from providing menus to taking orders to service of 2 small cups of coffee (whereas another table of 2 was lucky enough to have 2 pots of coffee brought to them at intervals). When the food eventually arrived some 45 minutes after we sat down, the porridge was burnt and I was given an "interim" plate of food that I hadn't ordered since my original order was taking a while. To my surprise, that order was then brought to the room about 1/2 hour after leaving the dining room but as I was rushing to check out and head to the airport, this didn't really help. I also noted other guests complaining about the breakfast service.

During my stay, no one was in charge of reception. The young lady who appeared to be responsible for check out was also attempting to deal with breakfast and this caused a delay in being able to settle up the bill. At check out there were other glitches (credit card machine not working, no change to give customers).

While the hotel's eclectic decor is indeed unique, a bit more attention to the fundamentals of customer service would go a long way in helping it to realise its potential. If ever there was an occasion where an on-site hotel manager was required to oversee the efficient running of operations, it was during my stay. Hopefully, this experience was a one-off and the hotel will be able to consistently provide the type of service that one would expect from it (and other travelllers seem to have enjoyed). All in all, after a blissful 3 weeks of quality service, this was certainly not the last memory that I wanted to be left with.

We really are very disappointed to hear that your stay at our Lilongwe property fell short of your expectations. Despite the very best efforts of our management team, on rare occasions guests may experience problems during their time with us. We value your comments enormously and there is, quite frankly, no excuse for your rooms not being ready on time nor the poor service you experienced during breakfast and check-out. I assure you that all your comments will be taken up with the staff at Latitude 13 and addressed so future guests don't have similar experiences.

Thank you for the positive comments on the standard of your evening meal. I apologise most sincerely that your stay with us was not up to our usual service standards. Positive feedback is always encouraging and, at the same time, we accept that there is always room for improvement and we will most definitely take all your comments on board and address the concerns you have raised in your review.

I have stayed here a few times, and have never once been disappointed. Living, as I do, in Africa is wonderful, but sometimes I just need to escape to this oasis of calm and luxury.
The styling of the hotel is stylish without being over the top. It serves without doubt, the best food in Malawi and attention to detail is clearly in every aspect of the service and presentation of this superb hotel and restaurant.

We only stayed one night at latitude on our way to the lake but we found it a very pleasant experience. The hotel is modern, clean and comfortable (didn't care for the black swimming pool much). The food surprised us with its excellence, very well cooked and very tasty. The staff were very well trained too. Lilongwe itself has become an unpleasant town, having changed for the worse in the last 15 years, it's dirty and congested but if you have to be there then Latitude 13 is the place to stay, unexpectedly high quality for Malawi.

We had two nights at Latitude at the end of August, following an extended trip in Malawi and Zambia. The management have identified - and addressed - a gap in the market, not merely in Malawi, but in the hospitality industry the world over. Small is beautiful, it seems. There is a client to staff ratio which one might expect to find in a hotel charging considerably more than this. The conversion of house to boutique hotel has been accomplished with care and style. Public areas and rooms are comfortable, well-furnished, and stylish. We had a garden room and loved the fact that the rooms were not overlooked, but gave a private and uninterrupted aspect onto the shady, well-kept gardens. The open-plan room was exactly what we needed: extremely comfortable and spacious; plenty of hot water; good toiletries; and not cluttered with hotel branding. During our (too short) stay, we ate all our meals in the restaurant. I can't understand why anyone would choose to go elsewhere: this is the best food we've eaten in Malawi. One meat eater and one vegetarian, we were both delighted with the quality, freshness and presentation of the food, and the range of wines on offer to complement the menu. The chef, Andrew, is clearly passionate about food. Equally committed is Lisa, the manager, who impressed us with her commitment to ongoing staff training which is producing a team of staff who have a grasp of customer service which is unequalled anywhere else in Malawi. Service is discreet, unobtrusive and quietly efficient. Latitude is very special. We didn't expect to spend our final evening in Malawi relaxing in a stylish bar, listening to a perfect chill-out soundtrack, whilst enjoying a good single malt. Latitude 13 is exactly what we want in a place to stay. It's our new favourite place.
