I have stayed here a few times, and have never once been disappointed. Living, as I do, in Africa is wonderful, but sometimes I just need to escape to this oasis of calm and luxury.
The styling of the hotel is stylish without being over the top. It serves without doubt, the best food in Malawi and attention to detail is clearly in every aspect of the service and presentation of this superb hotel and restaurant.

We only stayed one night at latitude on our way to the lake but we found it a very pleasant experience. The hotel is modern, clean and comfortable (didn't care for the black swimming pool much). The food surprised us with its excellence, very well cooked and very tasty. The staff were very well trained too. Lilongwe itself has become an unpleasant town, having changed for the worse in the last 15 years, it's dirty and congested but if you have to be there then Latitude 13 is the place to stay, unexpectedly high quality for Malawi.

We had two nights at Latitude at the end of August, following an extended trip in Malawi and Zambia. The management have identified - and addressed - a gap in the market, not merely in Malawi, but in the hospitality industry the world over. Small is beautiful, it seems. There is a client to staff ratio which one might expect to find in a hotel charging considerably more than this. The conversion of house to boutique hotel has been accomplished with care and style. Public areas and rooms are comfortable, well-furnished, and stylish. We had a garden room and loved the fact that the rooms were not overlooked, but gave a private and uninterrupted aspect onto the shady, well-kept gardens. The open-plan room was exactly what we needed: extremely comfortable and spacious; plenty of hot water; good toiletries; and not cluttered with hotel branding. During our (too short) stay, we ate all our meals in the restaurant. I can't understand why anyone would choose to go elsewhere: this is the best food we've eaten in Malawi. One meat eater and one vegetarian, we were both delighted with the quality, freshness and presentation of the food, and the range of wines on offer to complement the menu. The chef, Andrew, is clearly passionate about food. Equally committed is Lisa, the manager, who impressed us with her commitment to ongoing staff training which is producing a team of staff who have a grasp of customer service which is unequalled anywhere else in Malawi. Service is discreet, unobtrusive and quietly efficient. Latitude is very special. We didn't expect to spend our final evening in Malawi relaxing in a stylish bar, listening to a perfect chill-out soundtrack, whilst enjoying a good single malt. Latitude 13 is exactly what we want in a place to stay. It's our new favourite place.

Our team stayed at Latitude 13 for two weeks in August 2013. We had a great experience here - the food is delicious, the service is wonderful, and the rooms are spacious and clean. I stayed in one of the six garden bungalows, which include a sunken bath, shower, large bed, and seating area with a great view of the hotel grounds, which include a swimming pool.

The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and I highly recommend the food here. Breakfast includes a wide range of options ranging from muesli to french toast and omelettes, and for Brits they even had Marmite! Lunch includes salads, burgers, wraps and salads. Dinner includes a choice of several different proteins or pastas, all of which are very good, and a delectable dessert selection ranging from chocolate fondant cake to churros. We even celebrated a birthday and anniversary here, and on both occasions the hotel graciously baked a cake of our choice especially for us (we chose chocolate for the first, carrot cake for the second).

My only complaints about the hotel are that despite two wireless networks, neither worked very well, and the generator did not always kick in quickly. In the room, one occasionally worked if you were seated near the door, but otherwise it was unreliable. In the dining area, connectivity was better but still varied. With regards to power, the hotel has a generator but it is not always immediately activated. On several occasions at night, the power went out and wouldn't come back for ~30-45 min. After a customer complained, the hotel provided us with flashlights, which made the power outages more bearable.

Overall, a great hotel and very highly recommended!

Thank you for taking the time to review Latitude 13˚ - your comments were appreciated and we're thrilled you enjoyed your stay. We are in the process of exploring options for better internet connectivity for Latitude as we've tried 4 service providers in the last 6 months without much success in improving connection speeds for our guests. The battle continues and we're confident we'll have a solution in place shortly.

Malawi enjoys it's fair share of power outages and erratic supply from our power authority and we recently upgraded our generator in an effort to combat this ongoing challenge. The generator does delay for a few minutes before automatically starting as we frequently have power surges or drops in voltage which can cause the generator to switch on and off very quickly. It is set to wait for power to be stable or completely off before starting - we will look into options to make this less noticeable for our guests but have taken note of your comments in this regard.

Thank you for your flattering review and we look forward to welcoming you at Latitude 13˚ on your next visit to Malawi. Rob

I stayed here while on a short business trip to Lilongwe. The rooms are very contemporary and comfortable (a desk might be the only thing I'd add) and clean as a whistle.

The staff were as friendly as you'd expect from "the heart of Africa" and knew what they were doing. The wifi worked, the drinks were cold, and the coffee local - what more can one ask for?

On the day of departure the mangers informed us that there were no guests due to arrive that day and that we could check out later, as out flight was scheduled for the afternoon.

The best thing about Latitude is the restaurant - the food was top-class and the selection very well thought out.

Ok, we didn't get off to the best of starts. I had trouble with the booking process but it is important to note that the way the property owner personally intervened to rectify the challenges I was having resolved these and way beyond my expectations. I wish every hospitality owner was so responsive.

We initially booked for 4 nights and quickly extended the stay for my wife and two of our kids for a further 3 weeks, so good was the initial experience.

The building is well situated in area 43 - Lilongwe's most upmarket suburb. The original house has been radically but sensitively updated to provide modern design and comfort throughout. Our suite was in the large garden, not far from the main building and large swimming pool and couldn't have been more bang up to date in terms of design and facilities. Split level accommodation provides for a generous seating area, large and very comfortable bed, sunken bath, massive wet room area with rain shower and wc. Wall mounted tv is well positioned and there is plenty of clever storage & wardrobe space for clothes. It's important to note that the property has invested in a sizeable generator on site meaning that it seems to be relatively immune to the frequent and lengthy power cuts that occur in this city.

The colour theme is very much black, grey & white throughout which certainly grew on me but initially seemed a bit stark. The red loo seats in the toilets near reception are the single exception - someone was having a good laugh at the design stage I think.

Food is truly exceptional; not just for Malawi but would stand scrutiny anywhere worldwide. Andrew, the amiable Irish Head Chef is talented and has trained his team very well indeed. I enjoyed everything I ate here without exception. Taste, quality ingredients, skilful presentation and consistency of quality are all present and the prices are exceptionally good for this standard of cooking. If you're in Lilongwe, try to get a reservation for dinner at least, before they put the prices up. Oh....and Andrew's soda bread...!! *smacks lips*

The staff are very professional, friendly and courteous. They offered help whenever it was needed and we couldn't have asked for more. We hosted a family dinner for 14 at one point and the service was just as superb as the food.

Room for improvement? Not much I can think of other than maybe changing the pool tiles colour from black to white? Maybe installing mozzie nets for the summer season at least (no problems when we were there in winter though - the Doom and blinds seemed to keep them (mostly) out of the room) and perhaps making the wet room floor surface slightly less slippy when wet? All minor details though.

Overall this is a great place and if you're looking for something just a little different, with the most terrific food and service in Lilongwe, then look no further.

Well done Latitude 13, team and owner!

Room Tip: Garden suites are everything you could want.

This is a hotel to recommend if you like staying in small hotels with characters. Upon entrance, you would feel like stepping into a consulate's residence.

The room was spacious and decorated with black and white colors and dim lights. The one we stayed in had a nice view of the garden. Modern minimalist bathroom with a sunken bathtub and walk-in shower.

The staff was very attentive, helpful and accommodating. We had dinner and breakfast in the restaurant and the food was healthy and excellent, especially the mzuzu coffee.

The only drawback during our stay was the lateness of the airport pickup. The hotel contracts with a tour company called Ulendo to give us a tour of Lilongwe after our airport pickup. The driver did not show up until one hour later when it was already rush hours. The driver said it was impossible to tour the other part of Lilongwe due to the traffic. We ended up not seeing much of the city before returning to the hotel. The hotel quickly apologized for the driver's lateness which was professional; but we hope it would not happen to anyone who has only 1 day to see the city.

This is probably the most luxurious hotel currently in Lilongwe. Bring bug repellents (bug spray is also provided by the hotel) as there are occasionally mosquitoes in the room.

Thank you for your encouraging remarks following your stay at Latitude 13˚, we pride ourselves on creating a unique experience for all our guests and appreciate your comments enormously.

What a shame your airport transfer and city tour were not as successful as your stay at our hotel! We have addressed this problem with Ulendo who, ordinarily, provide an excellent service with great vehicles and guides - the main reason we recommend them to our guests. Apparently there were some road closures in the city on the day of your excursion and this resulted in traffic grinding to a stand still. Communication with the transfer operator, our team at Latitude and our guests has been reviewed to ensure that no-one is left appreciating the wonderful facilities at Kamuzu International Airport for a minute longer than absolutely necessary!

We hope to see you again in Lilongwe and look forward to the opportunity to show you our city with punctual transfers and informative guides.
