Ok, we didn't get off to the best of starts. I had trouble with the booking process but it is important to note that the way the property owner personally intervened to rectify the challenges I was having resolved these and way beyond my expectations. I wish every hospitality owner was so responsive.
We initially booked for 4 nights and quickly extended the stay for my wife and two of our kids for a further 3 weeks, so good was the initial experience.
The building is well situated in area 43 - Lilongwe's most upmarket suburb. The original house has been radically but sensitively updated to provide modern design and comfort throughout. Our suite was in the large garden, not far from the main building and large swimming pool and couldn't have been more bang up to date in terms of design and facilities. Split level accommodation provides for a generous seating area, large and very comfortable bed, sunken bath, massive wet room area with rain shower and wc. Wall mounted tv is well positioned and there is plenty of clever storage & wardrobe space for clothes. It's important to note that the property has invested in a sizeable generator on site meaning that it seems to be relatively immune to the frequent and lengthy power cuts that occur in this city.
The colour theme is very much black, grey & white throughout which certainly grew on me but initially seemed a bit stark. The red loo seats in the toilets near reception are the single exception - someone was having a good laugh at the design stage I think.
Food is truly exceptional; not just for Malawi but would stand scrutiny anywhere worldwide. Andrew, the amiable Irish Head Chef is talented and has trained his team very well indeed. I enjoyed everything I ate here without exception. Taste, quality ingredients, skilful presentation and consistency of quality are all present and the prices are exceptionally good for this standard of cooking. If you're in Lilongwe, try to get a reservation for dinner at least, before they put the prices up. Oh....and Andrew's soda bread...!! *smacks lips*
The staff are very professional, friendly and courteous. They offered help whenever it was needed and we couldn't have asked for more. We hosted a family dinner for 14 at one point and the service was just as superb as the food.
Room for improvement? Not much I can think of other than maybe changing the pool tiles colour from black to white? Maybe installing mozzie nets for the summer season at least (no problems when we were there in winter though - the Doom and blinds seemed to keep them (mostly) out of the room) and perhaps making the wet room floor surface slightly less slippy when wet? All minor details though.
Overall this is a great place and if you're looking for something just a little different, with the most terrific food and service in Lilongwe, then look no further.
