Sunbird Capital
Ranked #4 of 12 Hotels in Lilongwe

I stayed four nights at the Sunbird Capital hotel in Lilongwe in early November 2012.

The hotel is located next to a large conference centre and government buildings, but far from everything else.

My room was not very clean, and the air-conditioniong was not working properly. Mosquitos in the room made me a little bit neurotic at night.

The breakfast buffet was ok, and the hotel has a lovely garden with an outdoor restaurant and a swimming pool.

The rooms are small and the beds are confortable. There was no shortage of hotwater in the bathrooms. A good variety breakfast is included with the room. You can order an espresso or capuchino.

Avoid sitting in the garden in the late afternoon to avoid the excessive smoke of the outdoor grill. When I was there they filled in the pond and built an ugly plywood structure blocking the view of the garden. The food is average and nothing to write home about.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms facing the garden due to contruction and smoke from the outdoor grill.

I found the rooms in this hotel to be quite comfortable. Good beds and pillows, and fairly new bathrooms. The staff were also quite nice, and the breakfast had a good variety. Restaurant food for dinner was decent, although nothing to get excited about. Unfortunately, because of the location of the hotel there are not any other options within walking distance in the evening. If you are going to Lilongwe for work in the area around Parliament, then I would recommend this hotel. If, however, you are in town as a tourist, the location is not very convenient to most things you would want to do.

I found it rather strange that the government rating for this hotel would be TWO STARS yet given the size of the grounds, their state, the pleasant , the ever helpful staff and the good food, they would have been notched one higher? perhaps?
The hotel is however not without its issues ... I found the sealed corridors rather stuff and a simple removal of the glass panes on the pillars on both corridors would have let in more air into the room corridors.
I also found it rather busy for a two star hotel ... so many business meetings from all shades of life... International NGOs, DFIs, FIs, Government ... etc... it was quite a beehive of activity.
They probably have the best brown bread baker I've known so far... their freshly baked brown buns with mushroom soup is quite the zing!! ... their vegetarian selection was however wanting ... I had to make do with the same foods over the week that I was there.
The air-con units have seen quite some mileage and could do with replacement in the rooms and the gym ... The gym though is very well equipped ... so long as the whole hotel doesn't rush there to train. I found 5am to 6:30am to be the best time to train ... the sun comes out very early and most guests are asleep then :-)

Room Tip: Whatever you do ... don't get room 243 ... I had to get another room as the AC in that one wasn...

I spent two nights in the Capital Hotel in June. There isn't a lot of choice in Lilongwe but I would try and find something else next time around. The last time I stayed at the Capital was 20 years ago and it felt like nothing had changed. The dining room is dark and enclosed (when there is a beautiful garden), the rooms tired and a bit smelly, the TV service is minimal and the service less than average. I don't understand why as the Mount Soche Hotel in Blantyre which belongs to the same company is being revamped and is very pleasant with a beautiful garden and good roof top dining.

Room Tip: The rooms generally have a nice garden outlook but no access to the garden which is disappointing.

This was my first visit to Malawi so I wasn't sure what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised by this hotel. It is a business hotel which would compare to 3 star hotels in the UK. It has good security and as a woman I felt safe. The breakfast is excellent - a buffet of fresh and canned fruit, cereals, breads, and an unusual (by European standards) array of steak, chicken and other meats, as well as sausage, bacon and the breakfast usuals. A barbecue is served here in the evenings as well which was delicious along with a wonderful selection of puddings. Servic at meals was good, friendly, but with most service I experienced in Malawi, don't expect anything too quickly! There is a selection of small shops and business facilities and a choice of bars. The building itself is seventies style, the rooms are standard, the bathrooms in need of a refurb, along the lines of holiday inn standard. The pool area has metal loungers and chairs with plenty of shade and cushions & towels on request. Check in was slow and frustrating, our booking was a day short on checking at check in and initially was for the other hotel in Lilongwe even though we had received confirmation by email. So double and triple check everything. The surrounding area is on the outskirts and opposite is a new 5 star hotel which really looks very swish by comparison. A good hotel if you need somewhere near the airport (about 28 Kms) which is relatively good value for money. I will stay here again.

the capital hotel used to be an excellent hotel when it was run bu meridian hotels..they pulled out and a local company took over only to cause disaster.
the set up of the hotel is well planned for malawi standards and the pool and mini gym are a bonus but are also feeling the age.
the staff are usually friendly and attentive but its hit or miss ...
security is a huge issue with so many break ins and odd characters in the lobby areas.
the sports bar in the basement can be fun but is male dominated so may scare off single women.
lilongwe city as a whole is probably one of the most boring places on earth but if you meet some locals at chameleons bar then its usually ok.
capital hotel was a hub for most residents in lilongwe during its hey day but has fallen flat recently with old age and little improvement.

Room Tip: all rooms differ but ask for a poll view or view over the large fish pond area.
