“Nice atmosphere for a sundowner if drink ever arrives”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 9, 2013

We just stopped by to have a sundowner at the pool and the elevated terrace by the pool was perfect for that. The staff though was extremely slow and inefficient, the most popular local beers weren't available and it took forever for our ash tray to arrive. Anyway, once everything had arrived, we did enjoy our drink and the view in to the countryside - not sure though if we would go again.

The first thing you would notice when entering this hotel is that it is a Chinese establishment. Now, I have nothing against the Chinese but in Africa we have come learned from experience that the Chinese are known for producing second best things. So I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the spacious and well designed reception area. The same was true to the efficient reception desk staff who checked me in a matter of minutes though I did not have a reservation.

You sense a damp unpleasant odour in the corridors and the rooms but your nose will get used to it soon. otherwise the rooms are very spacious with big neatly made, clean beds. The furniture in the room is new and of reasonable quality. The room is complete with a big TV set with more than 20 channels including the complete DSTV super sport and wide selection of movies and news. There is this curious writing table attached to the tea server but it is a real nuisance as it is located right next to the bed.

The only serious problem in the room is the shower box which is not properly fitted so floods the bathroom whenever you take a shower. They have to ensure it is water tight otherwise guests will be forced to take their shower in the bath tub instead of the cubicle as I was forced to do.

The hotel provides free Internet connection but it practically doesn't work in the rooms and even at the reception you will only be able to get intermittent access. However, I have learned that this is the a problem all over the city so there is probably little that the hotel could do. However, they could certainly do something about the telephone in the rooms. I wanted to receive international call from abroad but I had to actually go to the reception and receive t there as they can't switch the call to the room. This is really inconvenient as the mobile telephone service in Malawi is very poor.

All in all I think for around USD 120 per day this is a very reasonable choice and I will be happy to stay there again if they remove that unpleasant odor from the corridors and fix the flooding shower cubicles.

There is nothing positive to say about this horrible hotel. Rude unhelpful staff, disgusting food, cheap nasty room fittings, wi fi that doesn't work and the whole place has a weird chemical smell. This is a cheap and nasty 2 star hotel suitable for Chinese people only.

Surprisingly good, and not expensive. Efficient check in process with 26 of us in the same group arriving at the same time. Assigned rooms efficiently but then misdirected to them! Rooms were clean and comfortable, but the beds were super firm. Hot water, cold air conditioning and dark curtains. Two restaurants with patchy service and amazing Engrish in the menus (Chicken Sludge and Corn Soup, and "Good Pot For Man" being two of the more memorable). Buffet breakfast a little dodgy with the burners underneath the hot dishes seemingly being the only method of heating the food (like the baked beans) and these were not turned on until a few people had turned up, so don't be first down there. They kept running out of cold beer, despite us returning every night and asking for them to have lots ready! Good gym, clean pool. Good taxi services from the hotel. Checkout efficient, but they only accept Visa credit cards with a pin - no Mastercard or other type at all. Would check out the 5 star competition being built currently if I went back, but otherwise would be happy to stay here again.

Room Tip: Rooms in the back building are quieter, and closer to the better restaurant.

I am a well seasoned traveller throughout Africa and this is one of my least favorite hotels. The staff are rude. Extremely unhelpful. If something doesnt work (and something wont work) they will be resistant to findind a solution. The "free" internet is extremely slow. The outlets require chinese style plugs, i wouldnt be surprised if they make me pay in yuan too. I am upset enough that I am cancelling my reservation during my stay and going to move to another hotel. I can deal with slow internet, I can find a work around on the plugs, but the staff being so awful is too much. I dread having to talk to any of the staff.

This relatively new & modern hotel is away from the city center, and spreads out over several acres with 200+ rooms. Caters to Chinese and other expatriates. Rooms are spacious, all mod cons, generous helpings of Chinese and other cable TV channels. Pool is big but unheated.

Staffers are helpful and English speaking.

On the down side, the food is mediocre, and calls to the reception are not always answered. The Internet is free, but quite slow except in the middle of the night.

I found the Peacock a bit sterile; it doesn't have that lived in feeling of the more traditional hotels like the Capital.

Room Tip: Request a room in the new wing.

I enjoyed my one night stay at the Golden Peacock. For me the highlights were its cleanliness, bright lighting, mini fridge, comfortable and sizable room, big TV with good channel selection, and free wifi. Nice but cold swimming pool. Also, a great shower.

It could use improvements on the quality of its food as another reviewer mentioned. Dinner isn't great but the breakfast was tasty and adequate for my liking. Wireless internet was hit or miss and I had to move to the room's door/entrance to pick up the wifi which seems to be strong in the hallways but doesn't reach inside the rooms. It was fast enough to sustain a skype voice call for over an hour with no interruption. At the time of my swim, the pool had gross green algae all over the bottom but they were vacuuming it out the following day.

If I am ever in Lilongwe again, I will stay here.

Room Tip: I stayed in the old wing and it was fine for me. 5th floor was quiet.
