“Lovely, friendly forest lodge with lots to do”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 13, 2012

Our final stay on our ten-day tour of Malawi was at Luwawa, which was a lovely experience. We had the opportunity to get out on a mountain bike tour of the forest; ate well in the restaurant, although not particularly adventurously; and were made extremely welcome by the British expat owner, George, and all of his team.

Our chalet was spacious with lovely views out to a well-kept garden. Somewhere I'd be happy to return to and spend more time exploring.

The campsite has great ablutions which were very clean. There is also a braai pit with lights, benches & tables and lots of shady areas to pitch tent. The staff here really look after the camping guests. They clean out the braai pit everyday and come at 5 in the morning as well as early evening to burn wood for the hot water in the donkey. The lodge has a nice bar and restaurant. The place offers many activities - walks, arrchery and bike riding are just a few of the list.

We spent just a week in Malawi and decided to skip Mt Mulanja to seek for a bit more quietness. We found the Luwawa Forest Lodge which gave it all:

1. Local bus transportation from Lilongwe experience with chickens/fish/hours of waiting
2. Oasis at the forest lodge itself. Beautiful rooms, friendly people, take really good care of you, beautiful scenery, hot showers and even a sauna. I am barely naming 10% of the things they offer.
3. The most beautiful three day hike through nature ending at Lake Malawi. The path was quite "hard" (that is more than doable for most your people, even children of say 12, but take good shoes and just expect a lot of walking!). The first night we slept on the top of a hill with beautiful scenery. The friendly guide+carriers (we were as a couple with one guide and two carriers) cooked a very delicious meal, made the fire, set up the tents. They even make sure that you get some privacy (so they don't eat with you but do share some time to talk). The second night we even slept at a school. About 20 children joint us there, sweetest children ever seen (between say 4 and 12 years old). Not shy at all for the camera and playing with some self made toy's (bring a football or so if you can). At the campfire, they even sang a song for us (Gospel song, proud little children singing as hard as they can, really beautiful and breathtaking).
4. Ending at Lake Malawi, allowing a nice rest to recover from the trip.

The first night you enter, they will ask you what meal's you would like to eat during the hike, which is really nice, they took such good care of us. Be aware that it is a forest lodge, which means that they need to generate their own electricity and things. It makes it a very homely place, but it is most suitable for nature lovers. You can also arrange other activities (bikes, rock climbing, canoeing) at the lodge, we haven't tried that, but looks great too.

We had a very pleasant two days at the Luwawa Forest Lodge - taking advantage of the surroundings to go hiking, running, canoeing, and then relaxing in the garden for some reading and sun worship. The managers have done a very nice job building up the facility - with lots to discover wandering around - a rock garden, a sauna, a tree tower, local fauna. Our room (Chalet #1) was comfortable, very spacious and clean - with a windowed wall facing the garden and small lake. The food was tasty and used some locally grown produce - although the portions seemed rather spare after a day of excercise. We did a few hikes - sadly viewing the clearcutting that is devouring the forest, but also providing insight into the means of making a living in the highlands. The price was a bit steep - especially on the meals - but still we would recommend the splurge for a unique forest outing.

We spent 1 night as a stopover on their campsite (we drove a landrover with rooftop tent), and this is just the perfect place for it, the scenery is great, plenty of things to do when you're there, we just did a short walk. The campsite is small and has flush toilets and hot showers (donkey), the owner came to greet us personally (well appriciated), although must said that it's not really an open space campsite, which if you've got a rooftop tent gives limited possibilities. We understood that you also can have dinner in the lodge, but this was our first camping day, so we kept it with a braai .. we recommend this place to people wanting to break up the long drive from Lilongwe to Nyika.

Our room contained about 5 beds, so you can take your pick. Basic bathroom, but with hot water. Reasonable food, very pleasant staff with good humor. The main attraction is the fantastic scenery here.

I loved this place! Luwawa Forest was totally different than I would have expected! The landscape an scenery in the mountains is so beautiful and the lodge is such a lovely place. You should not miss that place when you're travelling to Malawi. The rooms are very nice and the staff is so friendly! I would definitely go there again!
