“Reflecting on the New Year”
Reviewed January 2, 2013

As we begin the New Year I can't help but reflect back on the highlights of 2012. For me it was my trip to Malawi this time last year. We were in Malawi for two weeks on business. Fortunately we were booked at the Cluny Lodge with Bev and Marinus, what a pleasant experience. The hospitalitiy was outstanding with excellent food served and immediate friends made. I just hope that there will be another occasion to repeat the experience. I would recommend the Cluny Lodge to anyone traveling to the area.

Always a pleasure to see Bev and Marinus and to stay at their homely, comfortable Lodge. If you want an identikit hotel this is not for you.
The owners ensure a great stay and are always on hand to assist and advise.

Room Tip: Ask for the bridal suite,it's big enough to play a round of golf in.

How nice to go back and be greeted like an old friend. The beds are comfortable with a huge mosquito net, but no mosquitoes. The bathrooms have lots of hot water and Bev does great things with the food available for the evening meal. You can buy internet cards and SIM cards here and it is only a short walk into town. But uphill on the way back. They spend a lot of time trying to sort out some of the niggles that travelling in Malawi can have. And they are so friendly.

Marinus & Bev (plus their huge bull mastif dog) were very good hosts. We only stayed one night en route from Blantyre as we had to be at the airport early the following morning. We had a standard room with a separate bathroom across the hall. The room was clean & comfortable, there was no fan or airconditioning but that didn't bother us as the weather wasn't overly warm. The lodge is very secure with guard and high wall (+ huge dog!)We had a very tasty evening meal -soup /cottage pie & veg with a good choice of desserts -all hep yourself. Breakfast had an equally good choice. There are hot drinks available all day which is a welcome touch. There is a computer available & internet connection. Marinus drove us to the airport (about 30 minutes away) -he has a great sense of humour. He and Bev are larger than life characters -as is their dog! (PS he is very friendly and kept quite separate from the guests)

Room Tip: Depends what you want -we stayed in the main lodge but there are ensuite rooms in their lodge across...

Bev and Marinus couldn't have been more accommodating, from extra towels to overall flexibility. Our group had a great stay here; the place is lovely, comfortable, and totally relaxing! The breakfast was huge, and the servers very gracious. I'm a true fan!

Bev and Marinus are to be congratulated for providing a home from home at Cluny Lodge. You are treated rather like a house guest and nothing is too much trouble. If you like plastic international hotels then this is not for you .but if you prefer a small hotel with personal service by the owners providing unbiased advice on what to do and where to go then here is where you should stay.Suitable for the world weary consultant looking for something different and the first time visitor needing a bit of confidence building in a new town.

Reviewed April 18, 2012

My husband and I stayed at Cluny Lodge for 5 nights in April. We started conversing with the owners Bev and Marinus even before we left Canada, as we were trying to find a furnished apartment/house in Lilongwe and weren't having any luck. Marinus started looking for us out of the goodness of his heart. He had never even met us, and still took the time to help. They are such a wonderful couple, and their B&B was fantastic. It is extremely clean, very well secured (the guards don't let anyone in without prior permission) and the grounds were beautiful. We looked forward to coming home every night and sitting out on their verandah and relaxing with a drink. Bev and Marinus were very enjoyable to chat with, but still gave us our privacy. I thought their price was very reasonable compared to other places, given the quality. Breakfasts were awesome, and you can have dinner there for $25 U.S. We never chose to eat dinner there, but I'm sure it was good. Marinus rescued us from Forrester Inn which we had originally booked because Cluny was full. He came over with his vehicle and two staff and collected us and all of our luggage. I would stay there again in a second (and probably will).
