We've just come back a two week holiday in Madagascar and given you often find yourself having to come back to Antananarivo to catch flights, we had the opportunity to try a lot of the city's top establishments (La Varangue, La Boussole, Cafe de La Gare, Petit Verdot) and decided to leave the best (according to tripadvisor that is) to last and made our way to kudEta.
It's impossible not to be impressed with the extremely creative menu. Everything on there was mouthwatering so after struggling to chose we ordered 2 starters and 2 mains. Very excited.
When the food finally arrives, three out of the four dishes are extremely disappointing, one dish (Prawn Ravioli) is inedible.
The potatoes in the potato gratin are raw. The fish curry has no flavour, fish is overcooked, portion laughably small. My grilled prawns are mushy and dissolve in my mouth instead of having a crunch like fresh prawn are supposed to have. The prawn ravioli (4 of them on a plate!) is not aldente but simply undercooked and the prawn used is canned. Very disappointed. I look to my right, the couple sitting next to us is having zebu skewers and seafood choucroute. Neither makes me want to order them.
Waiters (and chefs for some bizarre reason) walk around like superstars, we are asked what aperitif we would like before we're even told "welcome" or "good evening". A lot of attitude.
Great inside decor. Great light. Great Music. Great wine menu. But this is of course not a lounge but a restaurant, and one of the capital's most expensive. It's not enough to have an inspiring fusion menu if your chefs in the kitchen are clearly unable to deliver.
Overall, Kudeta turned out to be what we were scared it was going to be. A pretentious restaurant for expats, tourists and wealthy Malagasy where everything looks great on the menu but not on your plate.
In need of serious improvement.
