This is a beautiful location, a wonderful hotel and a superb restaurant. We stayed here twice, both coming and going, and loved it both times. Different rooms, but each charming and well-kept and we felt pampered. The restaurant is the best we had in Madagascar and we loved the different rums. The garden is beautiful and the views from the rooms were storybook.

La Varangue offers a small number of very clean, nicely-decorated and comfortable rooms. The beds have mosquito nets, a welcome extra in a city where it is impossible to escape from the insects. It serves as a comfortable oasis from the polluted - though very interesting and sometimes very quaint - streets of Antananarivo. It has a small bar, a beautiful dining room and a pleasant outdoor terrace. La Varangue is known as having the best cuisine in the country. But best of all, the staff are all lovely, attentive, capable people.

La Varangue

We stayed twice in this very good and interesting small hotel situated next to the President’s Palace.

The public areas and restaurant are decorated like an antique shop with many brass oil lamps, antique phones and many other items. Our room was large and comfortably furnished in an “old fashioned” style with a good bathroom.

The star attraction of the hotel is the restaurants superbly cooked and presented French Novell cuisine at a small fraction of the cost of a comparable meal in Paris.

All the hotel staff members were helpful and most were able to adequately communicate in English.

We would strongly recommend La Varangue to friends visiting Antananarivo.

We really enjoyed our stay here. We had an amazing room (Imperial Suite), with a lounge, guest toilet as well as a main toilet, with a corner bath and shower, as well as two plasma TVs. The staff, from the gardeners to the manager, were very friendly and helpful, and tried their best to communicate with us in English. The hotel is also in a very central part of town, so it is easy to get around, even without a taxi. The Dinner was slightly more expensive compared to other restuarants, but the food and service was worth the extra cost. Breakfast was the standard Madagascar style, not really exciting. This hotel offers value for your money, and if I am in Tana again, I will definitely stay there.

This hotel is in a quiet part of Antananarivo and therefore it is peaceful. The hotel has wireless internet, electricity, modern plumbing, and even in room hairdryers and heaters! Mosquito nets provided.

The restaurant is great for dinner. The cuisine is French, and although pricey, very, very good. Breakfast I was not as impressed with as there is no choice - you get a standard breakfast which is ok, but nothing special. The menus are all in French, but there are some English speaking staff to help you translate!

The staff was great and the rooms were lovely. I stayed here twice during my trip and was very pleased both times.
