Althought it seems beloved by reviewers, I don't really understand the raves. The complex is tucked into a hillside below the Presidential Palace in Tana, and consists of a number of small, adjacent buildings with rooms that vary significantly. I stayed there twice in October 2011. The first room was in the "main" building above the restaurant. The carpeting was somewhat worn, the bathroom lacked privacy as it was enclosed in half-walls only, and some of the windows overlooked a balcony that served as a storage depot for an assortment of unsightly junk. The room had a useful range of ammenitites...small safe, stocked refrigerator, TV, mosquito nets on beds, etc. But overall the feeling was dark and somewhat dingy. My second stay was in an adjacent building (just to the right, if facing the main entrance), and the room had large bathroom and half bath, laminate wood floors (cleaner feeling than carpet), a sitting room, and a nice view across back gardens to a nearby hillside.

Service was "ok"...if somewhat cold and anonymous. This extended to the restaurant, where the food quality is high, but the maitre d' is unwelcoming and the overall service oddly distant. The decor is an amusing mix of old telephones, adding machines and other peculiar ephemera displayed against warm yellow walls. Patrons seem to be a mix of both tourists and locals, which was a nice change from the typical tourist locations.

Really--the only reason to stay here is the restaurant...otherwise, the rooms are ordinary. Oh, and walk up the hill to the Colbert Patisserie for a great breakfast of delicious pastries.

Room Tip: Don't stay in the main building above the restaurant.

Great little hotel / inn in 'Tana. Returned to it on business after a gap of several years, and it was great to see all the improvements to the hotel. Great, friendly staff, really high level of service, and very well maintained. It really did feel like a "home away from home". It is exceptionally well run, with staff out everywhere touching up the paint, making sure the meal is served properly. Could not fault it.

Room Tip: Room 21 was my preferred room - great views.

We stayed for 2 nights at the end of a trip, in one of the newer rooms. This was good - clean and quiet, though a little soul-less - the older rooms are perhaps nicer? Windows in the bathroom that didn't close made it a little cold. Great to have wi-fi and a free to use computer. The hotel is well located for the centre of town, and very close to a fantastic patisserie. The decor is great - collections of all sorts of brass instruments and machines.

The restaurant of course is the highlight, and they were very kind to let us change our half-board single-dish menu (the same for both nights) for something more interesting for no charge. By far the best food in Mada. Mark-ups on bottles of wine are a tad eye-watering though.

We stayed here twice on our tour of Madagascar. The first night we stayed in a room in the old part of the hotel and the second night was in the newer part. We much preferred the the older roomk - the newer room, whilst more modern and very comfortable was a bit 'corporate' for our taste, though some people might prefer that.

The restaurant is excellent, though on our second visit we were both suffering from 'travellers' tummy' (not picked up here I hasten to say) so unfortunately were not able to take advantage of it.

Room Tip: We preferred the rooms in the older part of the hotel

My husband and I stayed at La Varangue for three nights in total. One night when we arrived in Tana and then two nights after doing some touring around the island. Both times we stayed in a suite and they were both lovely. The second one was enormous and very comfortable. The hotel itself is very welcoming and the staff very accommodating. The decor is very interesting as well - so many trinkets collected over obviously many years. But the one real standout for this hotel is the restaurant. We had dinner twice and lunch once here and we can honestly say that the food was as good as you would get in many places in Paris. Service was impeccable from the head waiter to the sommelier. A real surprise. Would highly recommend a stay in the hotel as well as dinner/lunch in the restaurant

Room Tip: Opt for a suite

The hotel is an oasis of calm, set behind a high wall down a quiet cobbled road just by the presidential palace. The décor is late 19th century French and you really feel you could have been transported back to French colonial times. There are only 8 rooms and the hotel has the feel of an intimate boutique hotel.

Our room had a small balcony opening onto the garden with views across ti the Haute Ville. The room was a decent size, clean and well decorated. One small complaint was that the room above obviously had wood floorboards so you could hear the people moving about above. We weren’t really bothered by this though and slept well. There is a top class restaurant on the premises -we didn’t eat there though the garden patio was pleasant to sit in for a drink.

The staff were friendly but didn’t speak much English as is the case in much of Madagascar. The hotel felt very safe, its behind gates and a high wall and the surrounding area was OK to walk in during the day though its advisable to take a taxi if going out at night.

We had actually intended to stay at La Varangue on both the first and last nights of our trip to Madagascar. However upon arrival for our second stay we were told that there was a problem with the bathroom of our room and that La Varangue had arranged for us to stay at The Colbert Hotel just around the corner. We accepted this but then reflected that as we were checking in at 10am it was unlikely that other guests had already checked in before us. Therefore why was it ‘our’ room which had the problem? We were therefore left wondering whether the hotel had double booked or whether we’d been ‘bumped’ in favour of guests staying for longer than one night.

We stayed in the Varangue at the start and the end of our 3 week trip to Madagascar. It is a very charming little hotel / house with great food and staff and I would definately stay there again if I was in Tana.
