“Not quite as great as aniticipated”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 28, 2014

This hotel was just slightly disappointing. From reviews, I had expected something rather special. It was in fact totally acceptable and comfortable, but not really unique in any memorable way. The superior room (which costs more) was large, though the double bed was 2 singles pushed together so in effect you sleep in a single bed, with a good sized bathroom and nice walk in shower. The old polished wooden floor creaked and groaned - no real problem for me, but I worried for any people below. I had real problems with wifi on most days, but this may have been a wider city problem. The staff were very pleasant and the restaurant - KuDeTa- is really very good indeed. On advantage of this place is that it is surrounded by good restaurants, mostly within a block - so walking at night is not an issue. So - no real issues - I just felt slightly let down for the price. I also stayed elsewhere in Tana - Chalet des Roses - for half the price, yet the room was comparable.

In the midst of Tana's endless hustle and bustle, this is a peaceful gem. Wooden floors, sweeping staircases, and steep roofed rooms.
We stayed twice, the top floor are more charming, and quieter, but the bathrooms on the 2nd floor more than make up for it, and have 4 poster beds!

This is a charming boutique hotel, with good service. We had a top-floor room, with a great view over Tana, suggest this be requested. No bath, good shower. No bottled water in the room, this was supplied on request. The in-house restaurant Ku De Ta, has a great vibe, service and food.

Room Tip: Upper=floor rooms.

We stayed at the Lapasoa twice for two nights as others seem to do during their trip around Madagascar. The first time we had a large superior room looking out onto a small but busy road. The rooms are very sparse, the towels were the thinest waffle towels, with holes, we have ever used. The showers are large and water hot. They do supply soap, as almost all the Madagascan hotels do but not shampoo so save your UK hotel bottles before you go. The bed was comfortable but the pillows were horrid and lumpy, the worst I have ever had anywhere.

The second time we stayed I asked for an apartment because of the road noise, which may have had something to do with Christmas traffic. This was opposite the main hotel and looked out over the beautiful hotel building itself. Same towels, same lumpy pillows, large shower but not much water flow. The best thing about the room was it had a kitchen with a kettle which was worth its weight in gold.

The hotel building inside has some nice furniture and artefacts sitting around. There is a small lounge area on the first floor and in case you miss it, upstairs on the second floor there is a little balcony where you could lounge in the sunshine. It had a wonderful view over town. The restaurant was sweet and food OK. The situation of the Lapasoa is good as you can walk to most places except the Queens Palace which needs a taxi - don't be afraid of them. See review of palace.

For us the best thing about this hotel were the staff. Like all Malagasy people they were very friendly. The laundry was washed and ironed quickly and brought back with a smile. The restaurant staff were always smiling. The staff/owners at reception were extremely helpful and went out of their way to help us in every way. They did store our luggage ( which was supposed to go to the tour office) but yes, it was under the stairs. It was left there for almost three weeks with no probs. The young man on the door who carries mounds of luggage up and down stairs need a medal. All in all, very nice people.

This is not a Boutique Hotel (isn't that a shop anyway?) but it is ideal for a stopover. If you bear in mind that Madagascar has not yet caught up with tourism and that hotel standards are not what you are used to in Europe and if you go with your eyes open and enjoy this amazing country you will have a wonderful time. I do recommend this budget hotel.

Stayed here one night on arrival and onenight on the way out.

Hotel is clean tidy well presented and close TK the centre of town. On the final night, and having spent 15 days hiking and bird spotting, the seemingly limitless hot water was an absolute luxury.

The proprietors are friendly and helpful, as indeed are all the staff.

The KuDeTa restaurant is attached and is good for an excellent evening meal, coffee or snacks. Food is excellent and reliable. No problems dealing with vegetarians, the vegetarian food was as best in Madagascar!

Very enjoyable stay.
Reccomended

If you're new to Tana, this is a great location from which to explore. It's central but also in a slightly chic area with lots of the best restaurants and shops within a 5 minute walk. The decor throughout the hotel is simple and elegant with a few well-placed artefacts. We were in a Superior Room (55 euros per night) which was very large with a lovely big bed. We saw a couple of Standard Rooms (45 euros per night) which also looked lovely but were quite a bit smaller and we wanted to space to unpack and pack at the end of a 3 week trip.
The overall feel of the hotel is cosy yet uncrowded and the staff are friendly and helpful. There's also wifi in most areas.
Breakfast in KuDeTa is good - fruit salad, bread, cheese, ham, cornflakes, croissants.
There was a cockerel in the building next door, right outside our bedroom door but we slept with earplugs so it wasn't a problem. We think their plug-in mozzie repellant was making us feel slightly sick (oddly), so unplug it if you're susceptible to that kind of thing.
Highly recommend Lapasoa and I suspect we'd stay here if we return to Madagascar.

We spend one night at the Lapasoa at the beginning of our trip thru Madagascar. We stayed at one of the apartments across the street of the main hotel, which was very spacious but a little dark.

The restaurant served very tasty food, although in the morning the breakfast was a little chaotic, since they had only one waiter for the whole restaurant.

The hotel is in an excellent location with many restaurants in the area.
