My Wife and I elected to visit Madagascar over Christmas holidays and the first challenge was getting a decent hotel of good value and location, yet clean (something you cannot take for granted in Antananarivo). Tana hotel is a great boutique hotel with cleanliness high on the agenda while located within walking distance of places such as Open markets of Independence avenue, the presidential palace, La Medina Spa and great restaurants such as La Varangue.

Rooms are reasonably spacious, very clean, fitted with usual amenities (e.g. mini bar, safe) and well maintained. The hotel is recently renovated actually. Service was prompt and courteous although the language barrier can often get in the way if you do not speak French. Also note that the hotel does not operate a restaurant so lunch and dinner meals will have to be elsewhere. On the occasion that we ordered for delivery through the reception of the hotel the food arrived cold. One other gripe is that the breakfast menu is very limited and after a few days we craved even the smallest of changes. No gym, swimming pool.

Room Tip: Choose rooms looking down the slope as these have great views of the city.

Tana Hotel (Tana being the abbreviation for the unpronounceable capital name Antananarivo) is a clean and reliable 3-star hotel (maybe even deserves a 4-star minus by western standards) right in the heart of the city center. The centric location is a big plus; all major hotels (such as Colbert, Louvre, Radama) and also the frivolous night entertainment (such as Cabaret Glacier, Palladium, Caveau, Pandora, 6 etc) are within walking distance.

Prices are fair: a single room for 65 EUR, plus add another 40 EUR for tranfers from / to the airport.

Reception staff is friendly, eager-to-help and English was spoken at a level that was at least understandable. WIFI works well in the rooms and is for free.

I had just an afternoon to see the historic upper part of Tana in a 3h walking tour starting from burnt-down Rova Royal palace (closed to public, but a small bribe will open all doors), down to Lac Anosy. A one-night stayover in Tana is more than enough to get the taste, as the city is not really filled with touristic highlights.

Tana Hotel is located one block away from the President Palace, so it is supposed to be a safe place, but in the night you see some dodgy people in this area. So if you want to go out by night in Tana, make sure that you have a local accompanying you (my walking tour guide happily agreed to join me for some drinks after dinner). Main problem are the aggressive girls that harass you, thinking you are a walking wallet.

Dinner at nearby “La Varangue Hotel” was perfect; I also looked at their rooms, which are more spacious and around the same price level of Tana Hotel. So, probably I would book this place next time in Tana.
