Thank God there is this hotel for budget travelers in tana, fed-up of staying hotel Anjary, completely devastated facilities there.

Hotel since its new has all comfy facilities as described by fellow members. This morning had trouble connecting my laptop with avlbl wifi. Manager was so kind to spend 30 mins in setting it up. Lovely!!

Only complain so far possibly the small breakfast with no cereals nor eggs. Only coffee and bread butter...

For USD 45, its a VFM..

Location:
The hotel is located right in downtown. Its a safe area but it was obvious that at night the parameteres outside the hotel was a red light district. We were warned not to leave the hotel without our passports. Plenty of nearby restaurants and cafes with many shops and traders within walking distance.

Reception Area:
A small but well laid out area which also has a shoe cleaner and coffee maker at reception - expresso only! The reception staff speak some English and laundry or ironing is arranged at reception and clothes are returned back to the room.

Rooms:
Very spacious rooms with huge comfortable beds. Rooms have single beds, double and there are suites available which have a great sitting area as well. Rooms are fully carpeted, have AC, fan, dressing tables, cupboard and luggage stool. The bathroom is spacious with a huge shower room and well lit. The AC in the rooms are set at 22degrees and generally do not cool the rooms too much.

Ameneties:
The Hotel suffers from regular power cuts for no fault of its own. There is a back uo generator that kicks in but usually turned on at night and powers lights and fan but no AC. During day time we had a lengthy power cut that lasted nearly 6-8 hours. There is one lift that server to all floors and can get busy when a group checks in or out.

Breakfast:
Very dissapointing as only continental breakfast offered where you turn up and sit at the table and a waitress servers you a small peice of crossioant , small peice of bauguette, some butter and jam and a cup of tea. Omlette was available but at a charge. Luckily cafe nearby did offer breakfast should you needed to enjoy more than one croissoant.

Overall not a bad hotel for Africa especially Madagascar - not that many great buildings so to drive right into town and you see run down buildings and then a really well maintained hotel is comforting. I would rate this atleast 4* - especially for Africa.

Room Tip: Try and get a room on the 1st or 2nd floor. With regular power cuts, its easy to take the stairs up...

I can thoroughly recommend the Central Hotel, Tana. The rooms are beautifully equipped,  and as it is a new hotel (opened in September 2011), everything is in perfect order. The beds are really comfortable and the shower and bathroom facilities are excellent.  The staff, in all areas of the hotel, could not be more helpful and attentive. The location is, as the name suggests, very central.

Booked it after reading the reviews on trip advisor which were all accurate. This is a very modern, clean hotel in a great location - very close to the heart of the city, many of the good restaurants and central to walk to places (during the day - don't venture out of a night without taking a cab!)

The rooms are very spacious and well equipped and bathrooms are amongst the best of any hotel I've stayed in. For the price this is fantastic value and definitely worth it. (I paid as much to stay in a far less luxurious hotel near the airport on my last night in Madagascar)Breakfast is good, but the hotel, whilst it offers meals at lunch & dinner, they are brought in from elsewhere - the only downside.

Don't book a taxi with them though from / to the airport. It is expensive and there is a great bus service that runs from the airport and drops off at all hotels requested for a fraction of the price.

Definitely more 4* than 3*.

Based on the previous reviews of this hotel on Tripadvisor, we decided to stay here on our last day in Madagascar instead of another hotel recommended by our guide. We were so pleased with our choice – this hotel is absolutely fabulous and deserves a 5-star rating instead of the 3-star which it is given!

Our local guide admitted to us that he has never been to this hotel before and hence, has never recommended his guests to stay here. He was very curious of our choice and decided to follow us to our room when we checked-in to have a look at the hotel and its facilities. He was as impressed as we were!

The room was designed and equipped to international standard by its Dutch owners. All the hotel photos which we see on this site are an accurate depiction of how our room and the general areas of the hotel look like. We even have high speed free wifi in our room!

After having spent the last 10 days travelling through the rough interios of Madagscar, Tana Hotel was a perfect choice for us to unwind and relax before departing for home. Our guide picked us up from the airport (we had flown in from Morondava) and we stopped at the craft market Marche Artisanale de La Digue (which is a very good place to shop for souvenirs to bring home) on our way to the hotel.

The hotel is centrally located in downtown Tana but honestly, there is nothing much to see around the city. Like most African capitals, it is chaotic and depressing. We saw homeless adults and children alike sleeping on the road dividers. Some children were even excreting by the road!! We had visited the palace Rova (which is way out from the city) on our first day in Tana, so we decided to just wander around the city centre during our stay at this hotel.

Following our Lonely Planet guide, we asked the hotel staffs for direction to an Italian restaurant called Nerone for lunch and were advised against walking there by them due to safety reasons. A taxi was promptly ordered for us and we were amused to find out that the restaurant was only a mere 10-minutes walk away from the hotel! The taxi fare was about €3 and we could have easily walked without any problems but we do not blame the staffs for being cautious with their guests. You just have to be very careful with your belongings and alert with your surroundings while walking around Tana but in our opinion, it is safe to walk around during daytime. We did not venture out at night as we have seen it all in just a few hours during the day.

We ordered a very satisfying breakfast to be brought to our room the next morning and enjoyed the tranquility and comfort of this fabulous hotel amidst the chaotic, depressing and sad reality of its inhabitants in the city. We highly recommend this hotel for those who stop over at Tana.

P/s: For those who love chocolates, right next door to Tana Hotel is a shop selling fantastic ‘boutique chocolates’ at very reasonable price. Be mesmerised by the décor if not the chocolates!!

The Tana Hotel is centrally located in the downtown area of the capital. The location is a little bit away from the lake, but is not really an issue since there isn't much to see anyways. I stayed there for only one night while in transit to Nosy Be, but was impressed with the service provided by a 3-star listed hotel (especially after finishing the tour of Madagascar and seeing what else was provided).

You can either take a taxi from the airport or arrange for a pick-up through the hotel. Although a taxi may be cheaper (make sure you get a set price before getting in), arranging for the transportation with the hotel offers a hassle free experience. They will pick you up in the lobby, where there will be someone with a placard with your name on it. Be prepared for a long journey into downtown, as it is a good distance away and traffic can be bad. The driver & guide will give you info along the way.

The hotel is unassuming from the outside, but once you step inside, it is well appointed and provides for a warm atmosphere. Most of the staff spoke good english, so communication is not an issue. Portars will bring your luggage to your room, so make sure you have some small change on hand if possible. There is a spa located in the basement, and a bar/breakfast room on the same floor as the reservation.

The room had all of the basic needs one expects. As the tap water is not pottable, you will need to drink bottled water. The mini-bar price of the 1 litre bottle of miniral water was extremely cheap compared to what you will pay in Europe or the US. I was on one of the upper floors which provided good views across the city. There is also turn-down service in the evening which comes with a piece of chocolate.

There is a nice selection of food available at breakfast. You can choose several different types of cerial, bread, fruit (a cup of strawberries or fruit coctail - this probably changes periodically), soft boiled eggs, and several different juices that I never heard of before. You will need to ask the staff for either coffee or tea.

There is not much of a selection of restaurants in the vicinity of the hotel, and the staff warns against anyone venturing more than a block or two at night given the chance of petty crimes. However they will arrange for a taxi if you want to go somewhere.

All in all, Tana Hotel is a nice oasis and gives the traveller a sense of Madagascar hospitality. It is definitely the top hotel of the three in the capital that I stayed in during my 3-week tour and will stay there again in the future.
