“History in unexpected place”
Reviewed September 9, 2012

This arch is the only survivng structure from the Roman city of Oea. It is next to a main road and is easily overlooked. Some graffiti damage and the backdrop of modern buildings detract from the site.

“Excellet restaurant at Marcus Aurelius”
Reviewed September 6, 2012

If you wish to enjoy well prepared traditional Lybian food I can recommend the restaurant at the right hand side of the Marcus Aurelius Arch.

I had several business lunches lunches and dinners the restaurant in the past 10 years. It was always perfect, with nice waiters most of then speaking English.

I would suggest to try camel food. You will certainly like it.

“More impressive if you come at night for dinner”
Reviewed May 12, 2012

The arch itself is beautiful. But, if you come just for visiting it you could be a little disappointed (after all, if you´re European or a world traveller, you´ve probably seen lots of roman arches). It´s the only remain of the old Roman Tripoli (called ´Oea´). Tripoli (from Greek 'three cities') was the ´third´ city in the region, the other two were Leptis Magna and Sabratha. During the day, you could come here after visiting the Medina or the fish market (by the sea, on the other side of the avenue). But the magic of it is visiting at night,. It´s not dangerous. Come in the early evening, after sunset, for dinner at ath-thar restaurant. Cross under the arch, walk to the back and climb the stairs that lead to the garden of the restaurant (or you can turn right, under the arch, and walk into the restaurant). Depending on the time, you can hear the call for prayer of the mosques while looking at the arch. This is quite interesting (a mix of cultures). Getting here could be a little difficult. Walking from green square is a little far and could not be a good idea at night. You can easily get here by taxi (if the taxi driver doesn´t speak any English - quite common in Tripoli - tell him ´goose Marcus´ (this sounds like The Arch of Marcus, in Libyan Arabic).
