the Aburi Botanical Garden is not to far away from Accra and from my first visit 12 years ago I had some good memories. When I returned recently I realized that no maintenance and upkeep of the project had been done. With proper management this place would have the potential to become a real tourism attraction. It is still a large garden with some interesting trees and plants, but does not meet the expectation. Worth to spend 1-2 hours or maybe more if you have a picknick there but I had expected more.
The climate in the Aburi Region is not quite as hot as around Accra and you have some beautiful views. There are also a large number of small carving shops along the incoming road

In the hills above Accra, so the drive there is interesting with wonderful views.
However, the Gardens are sadly neglected. Many trees not identified or else labels damaged and undecipherable. As we walked around we came across several open pits dug into the ground full or half full of all kinds of rubbish. We also narrowly missed stepping on a Green Mamba !
The whole place needs a lot of TLC and money spent on it to make it worthy of a visit.

The botanical gardens are about 90 mins. drive from Accra. Situated in the Aburi Hills with great views , the climate is far less humid and very relaxing. The basic layout is about 100 years old and there are plenty of mature trees and plants. It’s well worth taking a guided tour. The most amazing tree is the “Strangler Fig Tree”. Over 100’ high, the fig has wound its way round an existing tree and so starved it of oxygen that it has totally decayed, leaving a healthy 100’fig tree which is totally hollow, you can get inside it and see the sky above you. Also memorable were the Kapok trees, the wide variety of aromatic trees from around the world – especially the “Brazil Nut Tree “ with its enormous pods containing scores of nuts.
Afterwards we visited Ghana's first cocoa farm -Tetteh Quarshie's Cocoa Farm - before returning to the cafe/restaurant at Aburi for lunch. If you like markets, there are some good woodcarvers in Aburi village by the roadside.

A nice place to get out of the city. Not a lot to see but a refreshing place. Relatively free of beggars. Good place to take kids. Go in the morning and pack a lunch for a nice picnic.
