“Well done”

Of particular interest to us at the National Museum is a large, four sided time capsule which is marvelously decorated on all four sides. The submissions of the children which decorate the walls was a lot of fun to see, The rest of the two level building has a number of interesting exhibits.

“Needs updating”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 17, 2013

Museum was ok, but very hot and didn't want to pay an extra 20 Cedis to take photos. On a positive side, you can get up close and touch many of the exhibits, something that you would never be able to do in UK. But.. very very tired and needing some serious updating!

“Well intentioned, but neither well presented nor maintained”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 10, 2013

Our tour group arranged an afternoon visit to Ghana's National Museum, but were rather surprised at the diminutive size and the condition of the country's flagship museum. As other reviewers have noted non-residents pay a larger entrance fee, and the 20 cedis charge for photographs is absurd in today's world. The exhibits are old, indifferently translated, and most seriously of all, the artifacts are not stored in climate-controlled exhibits. Indeed, there is no air-conditioning in the building, and the second level is especially hot. There are large floor fans, but they are of little help. Our guide was knowledgeable and helpful, but the other staff looked bored. The washrooms were clean.

The building is not accessible to people with disabilities.

We spent only one hour in the museum, then left, and did not think that we had missed much else.

The museum is worth a visit, as there is something to be learned regarding Ghana's history, but it is a pity that the country does not do more to protect and present its historic heritage.

Foreigner has to pay 7cedis and Locals 2 cedis for the entrance fee. If you wish to take photos in the museum, you will have to pay another 20cedis. However, the stuff shown in the museum is interesting and worth every minute of my time! However, the place is hard to locate as the signboard at the entrance is pretty small!

“Nice for a Two Hour or Less Visit”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 28, 2012

Exhibit descriptions which were in English was a big plus, but expecting to pay three times the admission price for taking photographs inside the museum resulted in a poor rating by this reviewer.

A little small compared to other national museums but worth the admission price of less than 4 US dollars. Items in their gift shop were quite reasonably priced, a pleasant surprise. Start on the first floor as the second floor exhibits are somewhat limited.

Visited the museum on the last day of my visit to Accra.
