We used a Green tourist taxi and went on our own as opposed to going via organised tour guide. We like to do our thing in our own time.

The taxi cost 700 dalassi £14, the driver stayed with us all the time and walked us around the market. Which was great because a.) he knew his way around so we did not get lost & b.) he made sure that we did not get hassled, he also explained to us the way the market runs and explained what the produce was that was on sale.
He then walked us along the beach to the port and back via the fishing village.

A big eye opener on how they live and just how poor they really are.

The market traders are great people to get to know. I take their photographs whenever I go there but only after asking permission.
The vital part is to give them copies of the photos on your return.
There are some very beautiful people there.
A modelling agency could fill their books.
Watch out for the wheelbarrows!

I good market to start with. There is a bigger one in Serrakunda. You will need a guide that will help you arround on both places.
We recomand that you take a guide and a driver. Then you and the gudie can focus on the trip. No problem with parking etc.
With some tour companies you will get this city tour for free if you book two full day tours.
We can recomand 4*4 south gambia and the safari in senegal.
We used www.bushwhackertours.com with an exellante guide called JJ. We went on four tripps with him. He was very good at adjusting the trip after ours needs.
Well edjucated in history and local coustums.
