Like many state owned hotels in Ethiopia the Ghion is a mothballed hotel, that charges handsome rates and offers barely maintained rooms and dopey service. Ancient staff in starched up uniforms clock in and out day after day and seem bored, bothered and bugged when you request service for them. Was it not for the magnificent gardens, great birds and convenience of it's rather pricey traditional restaurant...I would not return. The main restaurant food and service is a joke. Major refurbishment is required here, but it is a great investment opportunity if you could bring in a vibrant staff and slowly modernize the hotel sector by sector. Their apartments on the far end of the gardens are however very nice, and if not overpriced they would be great value for money.

The setting and grounds of this hotel are excellent with big mature trees and nicely maintained gardens. The public areas inside are also pleasant and the restaurant is very good by Ethiopian standards - most of the dishes on the menu are available, arrive quickly and taste good. The rooms are less great, in need of an upgrade - which is true of the whole country really. Service was OK in a country where service doesn't come naturally. Check in was efficient and the money change service worked OK. Several souvenir shops in the reception area were expensive. Good security both on the gate and on the door. Parking looked a bit of a nightmare.

If you're staying on a Saturday, don't miss the amazing wedding show in the grounds. Every upmarket wedding for miles around seems to come to take photos in the gardens, and the outfits are fantastic. From about 3pm till 6pm.

I stayed here for 2 nights in March for business as I wanted to try a new hotel close to the office. The hotel has beautiful gardens which are a pleasure to walk in. The decor is dated and reminds me of 'Fawlty Towers' it has a certain charm. The rooms however need some work, there are no curtains, no hot water and no flushing toilet. Internet is available at a cost ($12 a day!). International restaurant is average but the Ethiopian cultural restaurant is great. Staff are pleasant and willing to help. I would suggest a 1 night stay only to sample this piece of Ethiopian history then move to a hotel with more creature comforts.

The hotel is very dated , but the landscape makes up for it!!! It is conviently located in the center of the city. You will find that some days the water is not warm for your showers.
The beds were comfortable enough. Just remember you are in Africa. You are staying in luxury in comparison to most Africans.

The staff are attentive and kind, I fell sick and was treated like royalty, they couldn't have been kinder. In terms of the place, it is old fashioned and quaint but also luxury and lovely.

What a beautiful garden, massive and right in the middle of Addis, just what I needed. Addis has very few almost none, parks and finding this place was a total life saver. There is also a swimming pool and gym. Idle away the time relaxing in beautiful refreshing grounds and enjoy peace and quiet and fair prices - Recommend.

Convenient for Bole International Airport and close to city centre. Hotel decor and furnishings dated but set in extensive landscaped grounds which are very popular with wedding parties and locals seeking some peace so you get to see a slice of Addis life. Westernised food in restaurant pretty ordinary but it is cheap. You'll need earplugs to counter the early morning broadcasts from the nearby mosque!

This was my fourth stay at the Ghion. I have no choice because Addis Ababa University, my host, is required to use it. Expect to have a few cold showers and maybe no water on occasions. The breakfast buffet is not exciting. The staff are friendly, but clearly the hotel needs a new management team and infusion of funds for updating as it is slowly deteriorating.

The Unity cafe in the grounds is a good spot to enjoy a beer at the end of the day.

The Chinese restaurant on the left of the entrance as you exit is worth a visit. We enjoyed the special meal listed on the front of the menu.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the gardens.
