We were in Addis for little less than a week but throught that if we were going to see any museums it would be the National Museum to check out the display on evolution and the Lucy skeleton.
So with nothing to compare it to I would say that it is quite good and interesting with most of the displays having to do with skeletons found throughout Ethiopia as well as a few relics from the different kingdoms which have reigned over the ages.
As far as the quality of the museum don't expect too much and to say that some of the relics are not really treated well (for preservations sake) would be an understatement, but then Ethiopia probably doesn't put too much funding aside for such ideals.
Many of the displays on the first and second floor had English translations, however on the third floor there were none.
The cheapest postcards we found throughout Ethiopia were in this museum, not the most exciting though.

The museum is poorly lit and and some of the items on display have not been described making it difficult to get the story behind the items. The museum also lack a prepresentation of all tribes of Ethiopia as i did not see stories and art from other tribes like the Afar people. The items from the Halle Saleise regime are well maintained. Lucy's remains should also be brought back and kept in the museum. The time i visited the basement display was closed. However, i was informed that a new building next door that will house the museum is almost ready.

Saw the Lucy exhibit at the National Museum with several other people. The exhibit itself is underwhelming but for the price ($0.40 USD) it was well worth it if you are in the area. No need to allocate more than 30 mins for the whole museum

We thought we would spend a good rainy morning here but it took 45 minutes to see the entire museum. The most famous exhibit is 'Lucy' and a great deal is made out of this. It was good that you are allowed to take photographs.

Visited Lucy, a skeleton dating back 3.2 million years. Yes a big WOW: Some other great artifacts on display. Not a big place so you will not spend more than an hour.
