“Great guest house, super friendly staff!”
Reviewed December 21, 2013

If you're looking for a way to break out of the expat bubble and feel like you're "doing in Rome as the Romans do" without sacrificing comfort, this is the place for you. Located in a slightly off-the-beaten path neighborhood 20 or so minutes from the Addis city center, Atelefugne boasts wonderfully friendly servers and staff, excellent Ethiopian cuisine, and very welcoming and comfortable rooms for a price that's totally affordable for someone on the backpacker budget (i.e., me.) Even though I came to Addis Ababa by myself, I left having made several genuine local and expat friends through Atelefugne.

I stayed in a room with shared bathroom in late November and it was rather cold and dull in my room. Accommodation was clean & basic with old & faded finishes. Shower was lukewarm rather than hot.

It is in the industrial part of Addis surrounded by motor spares dealers. It is close to the African Union building so unless you have business there, it is out of the way and can be a little tricky trying to get to and from the sights and decent restaurants.

The owner was friendly and helpful, but communication with the rest of the staff can be difficult if you cannot speak Ahmaric.

I had a disappointing and stressful experience here - Yohannis (the manager) promised to take me to the airport for my return flight and we had agreed the fare on the day before. However, he was nowhere to be found at the agreed meeting time. None of the staff were helpful in trying to help get hold of him and told me to wait. With time running out until my flight, the security guard eventually assisted me in finding a taxi to get there - this wasn't straight forward as it was still 6h30 in the morning.

I stayed at Atelefugne for about 10 nights after first staying at a much more expensive (but also nice) guest house over near Edna Mall. The rooms are actually quite beautiful (dark wooden floors, chairs, etc.) and come with soap, towel, and toilet paper. I also liked the restaurant at the hotel which has a nice, covered terrace so you can watch the traffic pass and enjoy a cheap beer. Friendly and accommodating staff (ex. let me keep by bag there during side trips)

I originally moved to this hotel because it is close (walking distance about 10 minutes) to the African Union, where I was attending a conference. Other than that there isn't anything to "see" nearby, but it's an interesting little area and easy to catch a taxi.

The other big selling point is that the WiFi is very fast and reliable (and free/included). No guarantees but they have a generator which powers the Internet when the power goes out (as well as the overall power for about half the hotel) which was important to me when traveling for work.

Main downside is the shared bathroom- it was kept clean but the room-to-bathroom ratio seemed off. When it was busy I had to wait for awhile sometime in the morning. It may be worth trying to get a room with a bathroom so you don't have to worry about that. It is cleaned frequently, but would be better to split off the bathtub and sink. Also, half the hotel (the side closest to the restaurant) is not powered by the generator, so you'll need to go hang out in the restaurant when the power goes out if you want light.

Anyway, on the whole a great staff, responsive via email, and great value.

Room Tip: I stayed in room 2 for awhile and really liked it- close to the bathroom, gets good light in the mor...

Looks much less good than it actually is. Very clean and comfortable with really good food in the restaurant and sound security. Staff are busy, helpful and genuine.
Our first stay was marred by a water supply cut. This caused predictable difficulties in an en suite room. The owner brought water for the hotel from her own home which was still on supply, at considerable cost in time and money. This is typical; she is honest, available and endlessly friendly. Her aim is to build a business, not make a quick buck.
Whilst not in the center of town it is close to the airport, not expensive and a good place to recover from a trip ending in Addis.

Room Tip: En suite worth the additional cost

I came to Ethiopia from Nepal, which is one of the cheapest and most backpacker friendly places in the world. So when I got to Ethiopia I was a little socked by the inflation. It can be a very expensive place to live as a budget traveler or backpacker.

Atelefugne is the best hotel you will find for such a reasonable price in Ethiopia. Furthermore, it is one of the only budget hotels you can actually book online. For other hotels in this price range you have to "attempt" to contact them, which is pretty difficult as they are usually not good about answering emails, or even the phone sometimes.

After arriving in Ethiopia my plan was to stay at Atelefugne for about a week and then move into an apartment. After about 10 days I found a place, but there was a big misunderstanding about the rent due to the language barrier. So I had to leave that place and move back to Atelefugne, and the owner allowed me to stay in one of the more expensive rooms for the same rate as one of the lower cost rooms. Not only that but she also worked with me on my food and hotel bill, because I had wasted a lot of my trip money due to the misunderstanding at the other place. In total I stayed at Atelefugne for about three weeks in total, as I looked for an apartment. During this time I got to know the staff very well. They get there very early and work very hard until late at night. You will not find a harder working staff. They do a great job at making sure the places stays very clean.

I would highly recommend this hotel to backpackers, budget travelers, and especially to people who have never been to Ethiopia. It is the best place to go if you don't know anyone else in the country. Ethiopia over all is very safe compared to most major cities, still, the hotel has huge gates which are locked every night, and guards on site 24 hours a day.

If you have any other questions please send me a private massage.

Room Tip: Tip: If you are planning to stay in Ethiopia for a while, ask Dan to get you a Sim card for your ce...

This hotel is a hidden gem. The neighbourhood may not be considered "posh" but is is very safe and friendly. We experienced absolutely no hassle whatsoever and even walked around after dark (unlike some other posh places where we stayed in Addis that were totally unsavoury at night).

We booked an ensuite room and it was clean, spacious, and tastefully decorated. I only wish I'd known about this place at the beginning of our trip.

The owner is a lovely woman who speaks impeccable English (she lived in the states for many years) and all her staff are friendly and well trained.

The food in the restaurant is to die for - some of the best we had in Ethiopia, and extremely cheap. You know it's good because of all the locals that fill the place up for food, beer, and football games on TV!

Stay here and enjoy!

I can't say enough positive things about this hotel. How this place has not found itself in the travel guides is shocking. The rooms are clean and spacious and have everything you need. The restaurant was the best value of any we tried in Addis, it's worth a visit on it's own merits. Our meal of spicy lamb wat (stew) and shiro tegabino (which were both awesome) and four draft beer was well less than 100 birr. The neighbourhood looks unappealing at first, until you start wondering around. You quickly realize that there are no hustlers, kids asking for money or "|students" asking you where you're from, just people that say hello just because. This was the only place in Addis where we felt entirely safe walking around after dark. The kindness of the manager can not be overstated. After finding the ATM across the street out of order she happily drove us to another location and also arranged us an airport cab at the local price. Great hotel.
