“Very nice!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 21, 2013

The hotel was very comfortable with nice attributes. The garden area [walkway] and the colorful water fountain added to it's splendor. The staff was warm and friendly. I enjoyed my stay and would go back.

Before I start exhorting the fantastic attributes of the Sheraton Addis, I must acknowledge that outside the perimeter of the hotel is squalor and horrific poverty in the form of shacks and worst-scenario slum life. While I discovered the (very) rare high-quality hotel features and services of this Sheraton, I was always aware that just over the well-patrolled fence, life was quite different. That said, this hotel is really quite fabulous--beautiful pools, spas, rooms, & especially its helpful & charming staff. The Sheraton is quite literally in a class of its own in Addis; the only other Western style hotel is the Hilton which has all the charm of a high-rise concrete bunker.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a higher floor with a view of the fountains and extensive garden area (otherwise y...

What a lovely oasis! This hotel does a splendid job under what must be very challenging conditions due to the general level of poverty in Ethiopia. Most people in Ethiopia do not have flush toilets and a more than a third of the population, of 80,000,000; do not have running water in their houses. But the management of the hotel seems on top of everything. Manager, Mr. Daniels, is extremely professional and knows his rooms. Ms. Samrawit was really personable and customer oriented at check in. The concierge was very helpful about sightseeing and day trips. Most independent visitors are not tourists, but are on business or good will missions with NGO's. But Ethiopia has considerable potential for tourism.
Due to our Starwood status we were upgraded to a suite, room 301, which I highly recommend. It has a bath and a half, in addition to a charming living room and bedroom. The best part was that it had a porch (not just a balcony) which overlooked evening water displays.
The Starwood online pre pay rates are a real incentive and should be considered if you are sure you are going to be there.
The concierge lounge was furnished nicely but charged for drinks (except for coffee) at all times other than breakfast and the cocktail hour. The food generally suffered from too early prep and thus the few hot snacks were never hot or fresh. The breakfast display was lovely, but again did not seem fresh and the choices and quality suffer by comparison to other five star hotels . I understand that they may add some items to the breakfast in the near future.
There is a beautiful pool and grand convention and meeting rooms. The internet worked perfectly and is free for certain rates and Starwood levels.

Room Tip: We really liked suite 301.

in the 99.999 percentile for Addis. However a few things can be improved.. There is no gym, rare for a 300+ usd a night hotel in a city where most of the people could live an entire year with that money. Orange juice in breakfast was acid and pancakes/ waffles/ hashbrowns really bland. Service was very good.. Location is okay.. Not close to anything worth seeing.

I was impressed with the size of this hotel, but in general i think it is overrated. Friendly staff, but expensive! Western prices in a city where the average yearly wage is not even what Europeans make in a day. Ok, this being said, it is a beautiful hotel with friendly staff and great facilities. however, we asked for a non smoking room and were put in a room that smelled like an ash tray. Of course i got a new room, to which we had to carry our own luggage. This may sound whiny, but if i am promised that staff will help us ride the luggage from one side of the hotel to the other and they don't show up, that makes you feel a bit disappointed. In our second room the door to the balcony wouldn't open.

The pool had apparently been closed for two weeks and only reopened the day we arrived. Make sure to check into that before you book. Also the spa was mostly closed for maintenance.

the food and bar are good, pricy but good and the staff are very helpful and friendly. Rooms are clean and you get a complimentary bottle of water everyday. At night there is enterntainment (thu and fri i believe)and you get to see the snooty expats and mostly flight crew at the bar. This is also a great place to see desparate foreigners hooking up with well, business women.

What i fnd truly sad is that you have to pay for wifi. Come on. It's the freaking 21st century. All other hotels i visited in Ethiopia had free wifi and here you have to pay for it?

In general, this type of resort hotel is not for me. You can see that they are working hard on expanding the place which means tearing down slums and on the other hand employing locals. Nice place to be for a couple of days but it does not give you a good feel for Ethiopia or Addis Ababa.

Room Tip: Ask for a non smoking room, not close to the pool. This way if you want to sleep early you will not...

I was in Addis for business. Rooms are nice, the internet works properly, staff are kind and happy to help. The spa is also very nice and the restaurant has a good buffet menu at lunch time. Worth the money.

The hotel is very expensive compared to other hotels in the region having the same category and having same stars.
The hotel doesn't live up to it's star:
A. The service at the hotel doesn't much the prices, neither in the reception nor in the restaurant or other area
B. the rooms are very old fashion and missing the coffee machine or electrical hot water facility for tea and coffee
C. The level of cleanness, in the room was not adequate
D. As member of the SPG, your membership is not valued neither during arrival nor at departure
E. the hotel put more emphasis on the security issues, which is good but no emphasis on the services
F. In the restaurant the tables are not clean as it suppose to be, the table clothes are used many times, as you easily see many sauces marks on it.
G. The waiters needs more training and capacity building (ex.: if you taking the buffet and the waiter comes to remove your used plate - the first thing he / she will do is to put you fork and knife on the table - for re-use; which is the right practice in a 5 stars hotel. This is a practice of an unclassified cafeteria..... Sorry this it in sheraton Addis ... )
H. I was in Addis during Ramadan and my plane was late in the evening - I asked the reception whether it will be possible to stay late in room to pray and brake the fasting in the hotel as usual ( i mentioned to them and they know that I'm an SPG member and frequent client in sheraton - and I stayed in the hotel for one week) I was asked to pay almost the same price for one night.... I was shocked by the way they handled this issue. I wanted to talk to the Manager no way to be found ... His assistant was in a meeting and will not be able to take a phone call for a couple of minutes to assist a customers ( no way).....
How can a hotel ... With these stars and prices handle an issue on this way ? How can you insure that the customers are getting the value for money?

Room Tip: If you are expecting a value for money than it is a bad chose.... Many hotels are opening in Addis w...
