“A must see in Addis!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 9, 2012

the museum gives you "first hand" insight in the terrible time of the red terror. It was opend in 2010, is free of charge(doantions are welcome) and there are several volunteers (survivors of the red terror) who can show you around and explain everything to you. It is terribly upsetting what they show/ tell you (for ex. How they were foltered ect) but it is part of the history and shall not be forgotten. if you prefer you can also wander through the museum on your own- the explanations are in Amharic and English. Very moving!

“History that has to be remembered”

Ethiopias history is terrifying. Life has been too hard for the people and still is. The museum is run by voluntaries and dependent in economic support.

“A must see attraction”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 19, 2012

This is a shocking place but absolutely worth a visit - what the Mengistu regime did was horrific, and this museum, privately funded by victims and their families, does a vivid job of informing visitors. The management are usually present to tell visitors first-hand experiences of the horrors from that period. Every bit as shocking as Auschwitz, even if on a smaller scale.

“not fun but definitely important”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 17, 2012

It's the tour guides that make this place -- each experienced the terror of the Derg themselves. History comes alive and this visit -- much like the Killing Fields of Cambodia -- helps you to understand modern-day Ethiopia.

“Very interesting”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 10, 2012

For everyone who is going to stay in Addis more than 2 days and who is even a bit interested in history. This museum is very well organized and is very informative. I had no idea of Red Terror in Ethiopia and was shocking to hear of such tragic period of this country. We took a tour with one very enthusiastic guide. You could feel that he really wanted to share his history with you. How big was our surprise when we found his photo on the wall among other participants of demonstration against Red Terror. This guy doesn't play a hero but it is incredibly interesting to hear everything from his personal experience. He is very friendly, happy to answer all your questions and passionate about this museum.

Highly recommended!

Entry is free (as well as the guide) but donations are expected.
