I was part of a big group and settled well into this hotel. The facilities are clean, staff are courteous and food standard was good. Our rooms were cleaned each day and laundry service was available. The only minor faults was that food service was terribly slow and the hotel staff's English language skills weren't brilliant which caused a barrier- only during my stressful situation of not having my bag from the airline. Plenty of taxis outside, bank/ATM next door and I never ventured out at night so couldn't state if it was safe or not. I felt very safe In the hotel. Reasonable prices and such good quality means I would definitely stat here again

very low running water in the shower. the hotel is in a very dangerous neighborhood area. so many gang looking people around the area are ready to attack visitors. You will be risking yourself if you had to stay there. The bed is absolutely feels like made out of the plywood which is very uncomfortable, in some cases the room is very dirty. It is just not worth it to stay and you are not getting for what you paid for it.

Addis is a city where I have always found it difficult to get a decent accommodation at a decent price. Most of the big name hotels such as Sheraton, Hilton & Intercon are overpriced and overbooked; compared to those, the Soramba is a quiet little place to stay if you are not going to be spending much time in your room apart from your night sleep. The hotel is located near the St. Georges (Giorgis) Cathedral/ Addis City Council area which takes about 30-45 minutes from the airport depending on the traffic.
Even though it was billed as a 4 Star, I would rate it a 2 to 2 1/2 for the comforts and amenities. First, the good things- I was in a "deluxe" room at around $87+ taxes (approx $112 per night). The room was quite big and spacious, there was free wired internet in the room, which worked throughout my stay. The staff are extremely friendly and cooperative and service is very quick- anything I ordered from room service never took more than 5-10 minutes. The food was quite tasty and well prepared. The place appears quiet and safe and we felt at ease throughout our stay.
Now to the not-so-nice things...There is hot water in the bathroom 24 hours, but during my stay, the water was lukewarm at best..and it was quite chilly outside, so it was quite an ordeal having a shower- and the water pressure was also very low. The toiletries provided in the bathroom comprised of 2 bars of cheap soap....and nothing else- no shampoo, no conditioner, no moisturizing cream...nothing at all. There was a nice balcony outside my room, but I found that I could not lock the balcony doors. The free breakfast is very very limited in choice, I found myself eating Oat porridge for breakfast every day, along with a boiled egg!
Overall, due to the excellent service and friendly behaviour of the staff, the safety and the location, this is a good mid-priced option in Addis, if you don't mind the minor irritants.

Room Tip: Get the corner rooms on each floor- they are bigger.

20th Sept 2011.

With Addis gaining in international significance, the hilton, sheraton and intercon seem always heavily booked. If you're looking for a safe, clean, pleasant, comfortable stay in Addis and you don't expect to be spending the whole day relaxing at the hotel, then here is a wonderful option to use as your base in Addis. I stayed at at suite in Soramba around Usd 75 per night which is reasonable inclusive of a nice breakfast, internet, free hotel pick up drop off. Nice quiet dining hall, quaint and pleasant bar thats open at night to catch a drink and meet some locals. The rooms are clean, the beds are comfortable, the tv is modern and offers you the bbc channel among others, bathrooms are clean, new fixtures, hot water thru the day and clean linen. The staff are friendly ( especially the marketing officer Ms Birtukan who goes out of her way to ensure that guests are looked after). Don't expect the Sheraton comforts as youre not paying Sheraton prices! If you want to get away from the hum drum monotonous predictable, artificial, unnatural, impersonal, cold, snobbish style of a 5 star (like the sheraton, hilton, intercon) and the types of guests who would normally frequent such hotels, then soramba hotel is a nice option. You can enjoy the feel of the local sounds, people, lifestyle and everything you need, be it a standard taxi or a free hotel pick up / drop off, its available. I was in Addis as a business visitor and I found it very conveniently located and not far from the city center La Gare area where all the offices are located. As a tourist, you will also get to meet other middle class tourists at breakfast and in the reception lounge and the opportunity to exchange notes on what to see and where to go in Addis. Internet is free and available downstairs although the free internet line is available also at the rooms. Overall, a very homely experience. I would go back to Soramba when i visit again.
Thanks again for a nice stay...

In a city where the hotels range from the outrageously opulent sheraton to some suspect hostels, we chose the soramba for its average rates and middle of the road qualities. At around 50 pounds a night its not the cheapest but it is clean, well located and offers a free airport shuttle service which cannot be sniffed at (and saves you negotiating a taxi on arrival at the airport)

the reception staff were excellent as was the luggage room guy, and the room was clean , spacious with a balcony and free internet connection via ethernet cable. the complimentary honey flavoured condoms were a bizarre touch but this is Ethiopia so bizarre can be common.

the retsuarant was very reasonable for lunch/dinner but the breakfast service wasnt the best and could be described as odd. They seem to be able to provide certain items really quickly whilst other seemingly similar dishes take what seems like hours to produce!!

I would definitely stay here again , but i will say that i felt a bit let down when the doorman summoned a cab for us. The driver offered us a very overpriced fare and the doorman was insisting it was a good deal. it clearly wasnt but we ended getting in it anyway because we felt we had no other choice . i noticed that cabbie and his mates were constantly parked outside the hotel the next couple of days so i guess they have a nice deal going there.

Room Tip: ask for room on sixth floor so you can get the city views

It's not cheap, but at least you get what you pay for. It's new, clean and there's continuous hot water. That's pretty awesome in Ethiopia. It's probably the nicest hotel in Arada/Piassa if that's the area you want to be in, which can be an hour from the airport when the traffic is busy.

Stuff you might want to do or see in Addis Ababa is pretty spread out so selecting a hotel by location is tricky, nowhere is perfect. The Soramba is a fairly new hotel just north of the Piazza area, close to St Georgis Cathedral.
The rooms are spacious fitted with good size, comfortable beds, firm pillows. All the furniture matches, though the silly little handles on wardrobe doors, drawers etc are breaking and not being replaced. As always in Ethiopia the devil is in the maintenance, or lack of it. Roms have flat screen TVs with 9 or 10 channels including BBC World and AlJazeera English and at least 1 movie channel.
The hotel has free internet by ethernet cable, not wifi. Most rooms seem to be equipped with the cable to connect to your computer, so you plug it in and away you go, reasonably quick too (for a country where the internet is at best slow and often non-existent).
Bathrooms have everything you might expect including hair dryers and shower curtains (not a given in Ethiopia) though the shower curtains have dolphins on a pink basckground! Water is heated by solar and is generally hot and plentiful.
The restaurant serves some reasonable food (try the Grilled Fish - English style) at reasonable prices and there is 24 hour room service (or so they say - I didn't test the 24 hour bit)
The staff are friendly and helpful.
In 3 stays over 2 weeks in between going to other places I was in 3 different rooms - all with views of the road, all satisfactory.
So all very good, yet....one evening before I was due to check out the next day reception phoned me at 10:15 pm to ask if I would pay the bill then as something was happening to the accounts system next day. Irritating. That, coupled with the lack of maintenance and the low-level of attention to detail (tile grouting in the bathrooms that wasn't cleaned off properly when the hotel was built and is still there now) just leads you to think it might slowly go downhill. I hope not. I would be happy to stay again - it is a lot better than most hotels in Ethiopia - some of which just make you shudder! Don't mention the Qualiber Hotel in Dessie in my presence!
