I spent 10 days in Addis Ababa in late 2013 and was invited to the Roadrunner. The charming and charismatic proprietor, Tony Hickey, was a wonderful host. He has lived there for a over 30 years and is a great contact to have if you are doing business or just traveling in Ethiopia. The choice on the menu was excellent, and the pizzas were as good as if not better than anything an Italian pizzeria here in Europe has to offer. There is a full bar and a good choice of wine (which can be difficult to find sometimes in that part of the world). The setting was delightful with a lovely fire to sit around when the temperature goes down at night, which it does in Addis given its high altitude. The guests are an eclectic mix of ex-pats, native city people and those like myself who were there for business or tourism reasons. There is a touch of 'Rick's Place' in Casablanca about the Roadrunner, particularly on a Friday night. Everyone goes there and the atmosphere is incredible. What really topped off a memorable evening was the singing and dancing at the end of the night when a traditional group entertained us all. If I ever go back there I will certainly call in again. A must if you are passing through or staying a while in Addis.
