“Shoddy!”
Reviewed May 13, 2013

Just spent 3 nights in this hotel (9-12th May 2013) and would not stay there again. The rooms however are clean, rooftop pool fine but the service is very hit and miss from the staff and the food is DIRE. I ended up not eating after trying curries, chicken, toasted sandwich and pizza and found all to be way off in taste and standard of how they should be.

Lobby staff very very slow. Ordered a coffee and after 45 minutes and 3 reminders to staff, I still didn't get one. The coffee machine was 20 yards away from my table!!

Nig note - this is NOT part of the Intercon hotel chain that offer a good 5 star service. This is a 3 star hotel sneekily branded as a 5 star which its clearly not.

From the photos and from the first impression the hotel seems really attractive. However, underneath are some design and management failings:
- The huge auditorium/lobby that goes up to the 9th floor looks nice but acts as a channel for all the noise downstairs to emanate to all the rooms upstairs;
- Also, the lack of care and checking: combined with the fact my room hadn't been cleaned properly (minor annoyance) were the non-closing sliding doors on the balcony - thereby hearing the noise from the traffic all night!

On the plus side the staff were generally helpful and price for food was quite reasonable (£20-25 for 2 courses and a drink).

This seems to be a 5* by ticking boxes not by passion from the top - if the badge says 5* it should be!

Let be clear: this is not an Intercontinental chain hotel. They used the name and added Addis at the end. But the overall experience is quite good: spacious rooms with fully equipped bathroom and a large flat screen TV. Heated roof top pool with a nice bar and excellent gym on the 9th floor. The lobby and bar are comfortable, breakfast is ok (did not try other meals). Prices are reasonable.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms just over the night club, sound isolation is really poor.

Intercontinental hotel, Addis Ababa is located in the heart of Addis.
It has open air lobby, roof top swimming pool, all day and specialty restaurants, bars, night club, health club with a gym, sauna, massage services (clean!), meeting and conference rooms, business centre, tour and travel office, FOREX office and souvenir shops and some for little knick knacks when you run out.
Interestingly enough it does not have air conditioning. However considering the high altitude of Addis and its pleasant constant temperature, one does not really need any A/C.
Its rooms are spacious and clean. Although some of them are in need of refurbishment overall they are comfortable. All our rooms have Satellite TV with several cable channels either for movies, films, sports or several news channel from around the World (CNN, BBC, Al Zajeera and TV5 Monde) several sport channels from South Africa. Private phone, Mini Bar with a small fridge, Complimentary toiletries, tea/coffee facilities, Iron/ironing board. It provides free internet access (Wi Fi) but depending on the number of guests at the time it can be sluggish. It also has In-room safe and access to individual balcony
The staff from the concierge, to front desk reception, to waiters and or cleaners are all well dress and clean of appearance, most helpful and always greet you with a smile. Room Rates include complimentary buffet breakfast, internet connection, health club services and night club entrance. Although the night club can be really too loud.
Another free service provided was the Hotel airport shuttle. This is very handy when arriving in the early hours of the morning or at night.
The only down sides were at breakfast time, they are a bit slow with replenishing food items. The restaurant provides either buffet meals or a la carte. There is a nice variety of local and international dishes available at a very reasonable price. However, at time the food served were not hot of the stove.
The spicy (chilly) food would certainly compensate for it!! So be warned as ANY food in Ethiopia is routinely HOT and spicy.
Another bug bear was the various pianists between 6.00 and 9.00 PM who’s music resemble more Chinese torture than musical talents.
Other than that and comparing with rates at nearby hotels, Intercontinental Addis is very good value for money. Will definitely come back if I return to Addis.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that is not above their basement nightclub

Did not overnight but attended a 3-day workshop organized in the hotel. Conference room facilites are sub-standard: check PA system, room very dark, kitchen located in the back with constant smell of food in the room. Quality of buffet lunch is appalling. The pasta must have been cooked for 25 minutes plus as it melted on my tongue :-). In short: there are much better options in town.

The only redeeming quality of this hotel are the size of their rooms, the conference facilities and technology support are below par, the staff helpful but not knowledgeable, serving staff friendly.... the kitchen is probably the worst with its low quality breads, horrible buffets. Breakfast is somewhat acceptable. Their machiatto has its redeeming qualities.....
The rooms are fairly large for Euro standards, the internet acceptable -you can stay in the hotel but do not eat there.

Room Tip: higher floors....minimize on the street noise and weekend partying

The Intercontinentaladdis Hotel is not a member of the international chain Intercontinental Hotels. The standard, however, is almost achieving international levels. The hotel has a large atrium, convenient rooms, each of them with balcony, a roof top pool, a bar and a rather basic restaurant. It is located just next to Kazanchis junction, around the corner are the Jupiter and the new Radisson Blu hotel (which has a excellent, but expensive restaurant).
