This hotel is clean and feels safe. It is also not expensive, and it has nice elevators and a modern look to it.

However...

It is very noisy -- it's an atrium hotel, and there is a lot of reverberation of general noise, and music, including at night.

Also -- especially if you are staying for more than a couple of nights -- the food is not very interesting and is limited as well. The buffet does not seem to change from night to night and the western (or at least non-Ethiopian) selections are few and not very tasty. If you travel a great deal, for business not for tourism, you do not necessarily want to change your cuisine dozens of times per year but appreciate the availability of a few international standard items.

Upstairs bar provided a few alternatives. Decent pool, possible to do laps.

Ok let's get a few things straight. Anyone who lists amongst their likes things that are cheap and then rubbishing the hard work people do in this hotel need to be ignored. Firstly, this is Ethiopia, not London. If you are expecting the Ritz, stay in London. We have lived in the Intercon for 9 months. The internet is not "slow" and even if it was that would be Ethio Telecom's issue, not the hotels. Get your facts right before you post. Second, the food here is awesome. If you lived off the room service menu, expect it to be restricted. Who cares if you did not like it. Go down stairs and talk to the Chef if you want something special like we do. As for "the hotel is in a slum.." Hello!! This is Addis and clearly you have your head up your... Because if you left your room and went to the Sheraton you would find the same location and by the way, the 16th richest guy in the world lives there. Get a life. Lastly... The reception team are wonderful, nothing is too much trouble and they always have a reason to smile and say hi. Maybe if you hadn't complained about nothing all the time you would have got to know them better. Do Ethiopia a favour and stay at home in the UK. Having lived in TOP hotels for 11 years I'm more qualified to write a review than you are, and if everyone scrolls down you will see who this refers too. By the way, the intercon now has a 12 meg fibre link for the internet and its worked fine for 3 months solid. My wife trades shares live on the LSE and good enough for her. If you do come here you will find wonderful staff always willing to help and a little oasis that tries its best. Good luck for the future intercon!

Stayed here for business for three weeks in August 2011. For Addis it is fine, it is not a five star, three/four at best. As I was here for a while I'll try to summarise the best and worst points.

Best
- Massages are about £4 and are amazing.
- The gym is quite good, range of machines etc
- You get two bottles of free water every day
- Some of the staff are good
- Happy hour 18.30-19.30
- The security guys on the barriers - always very friendly and helpful - would always get taxis for us, help us out with directions to places, etc

Worst
- Majority of the staff are slow and don't always do what they say they will
- The food is awful - the only thing on the room service menu that was even remotely nice is the chinese stir fried noodles - everything else is horrible
- The hotel is pretty much surrounded by a slum, with nothing much close to it in terms of restaurants/bars etc - they are all in Bole
- The receptionists in particular are awful, a little rude, and totally useless - if you ask them anything, or ask them to do something for you, they wont help you, even if they say they will
- The internet connection is rubbish - very very slow

I have read a lot of negative reviews about this place, but I don't see how they could write such things. I stayed here for 3 weeks for a business trip, and the service was wonderful. Anything you needed, they would bring it for you. I was very sick for almost a week, and they called a doctor for me, brought me fresh juices, even brought up breakfast free of charge. The room service was good, I ate in most of time, especially after I got sick from eating something outside the hotel. The cleaning maids were friendly and smiled at you everytime you passed by them. They would start making up the room very early in the morning, but I would already be gone to work by the time they got to my room. If you didn't want to be disturbed, then all you had to do was leave the sign on your door.

The gym was very clean and big enough with a variety of machines. The view was very nice from the 8th floor (I requested a room on the upper level which was not a problem to get). The pool was nice on the top floor, I never did get a chance to go in, but I did touch the water and it was very warm on a very cold night.

The breakfast in the morning was very good and plentiful. It was included in the price so I took advantage of it every morning. Fresh juices, hot and cold meals were available.

The open concept design of the hotel with its glass elevator doors is very interesting and clever. The bad thing about it is the echoing sounds that elevate all the way to the top, but that takes getting used to and eventually, you don't even notice anymore.

The only thing I can say that was a bit hassling was the security at the front doors, they would ask to search your bags everyday, even if they knew you. But I suppose it's better to have that than not to.

All in all, for the price of 140$ US a night, it's comfortable, friendly and has all you need, especially in a place like Addis Ababa, where just outside the doors, your comfort zone vanishes completely.

I haven't stayed at the Sheraton or the Hilton, but the Intercontinental is a good value for the price you pay.

Room Tip: Try to get a room on the 8th floor facing the mountains

This is the third time I am returning here. The first time I think I was lucky and got the right room. Stayu two and three however is another story... cold showers, leaking drains, sliding doors neatrly falling on my head as they derail. Shelves collapsing. I am waiting for them to move me to another room - hopefully its better.

SHAPE UP - else its the Hilton next time.

I satyed in a transit during my africa trip. Hotel is very good. Very peacefull atmosphere. Had a nice breakfast in the restaurant. Good internet facility. Located in Downtown. Access to all major clubs and shopping centres. Hotel is not too far away from the Addis Ababa Airport.

Ideal location for me for work purposes, but fell foul of assuming it was part of the Intercontinental chain (it isn't). Breakfasts were very ordinary, room OK but a bit tired, so a 5 star category it isn't. But, then again, it was less than 100 bucks a night, so it appears you do indeed get what you pay for.
