We have stayed in Addis Ababa for 16 hours only waiting for our connecting flight to Cape Town but time we have had spent in stop over hotel Radison Blue we will never forget. Great organisation from Ethiopian Airlines staff from transfer desk, shuttle service! And in the hotel all staff great, very kind. Room (and bed mainly) excellent, meal (we received free of charge breakfast, lunch and dinner too) very good. Hotel staff fetch a taxi for us (to see Holy Trinity Cathedral) , unfortunately a bit over prices (1 km at about 2 USD). There is in hotel Tomoca coffee as well - must to taste, so good and strong coffee we have never tasted and for only 35 birr.

Room tip: try ask for room opposite side to main road

Stayed here for 2 nights and paid an extra 40 dollars a night for a business class room after initially checking into a regular room. The rooms are exactly the same, just that the business class rooms are on the 9th floor where the business lounge is. You get happy hours from 5-8 which includes unlimited drinks, which includes above average wine and table spirits like Jameson, Gordon's or Red Label along with soft beverages and some light snacks.

Firstly, if you're paying the extra 40 for quality drinks, you're actually better off just ordering what you want to eat and drink because the food isn't something to write home about and no premium spirits included. In fact, when I complained about the quality of meat and salmon being served, all I got was a shrug from the lady server there who was otherwise incredibly pleasant.

I decided to order room service in my room and ordered a chicken curry which the chef made to order. While the curry itself was great, the chicken was pink on the inside. I ate the curry and rice and left the chicken alone. When the room service fellow asked for feedback and I gave it to him, I got my second shrug of the evening. Again, the fellow was ever smiling and a total delight but not trained in service recovery at all.

Either the staff shouldn't ask for feedback, or if they do they should work on it. Not even sure if it was communicated to the kitchen in both instances.

On the second night again ordered room service and was served a bland plate of penne and tomato sauce, without chilli or garlic, despite having asked for it. Was just too exhausted to make a big deal about it. Left a hotel without tipping after a very long time.

What works for the hotel is that the rooms are clean, the beds are very comfortable and the bathrooms are well appointed as well. The gentlemen ferrying you on the shuttles between the airport and hotel are also very pleasant and friendly. Easy to understand why its popular with business travellers.

I decided to take advantage of a special offer from Radisson Blu and the experience did not disappoint. The staff were quite pleasant and helpful and requests were attended to promptly. The room was spacious and clean and though it faced the front there was no disturbance from traffic as I had feared.

That said, in the letter communicating the special offer, airport pick and drop were listed as complementary but were charged $7 each way. In addition, there was a long queue when checking out with only one cashier and my scheduled departure time came and past while I was still on the queue. As guests are requested to book for the shuttle 24 hours in advance, based on the number of guests leaving at a particular time, it would be good to add another cashier to ensure everyone is able to leave on time . I missed my planned 6 o'clock shuttle and had to wait sometime for the next.
