“best area in addis”
Reviewed January 14, 2012

stayed in bole rock 3 nights $77 per night for a suite including breakfast. suite has bedroom and living room with nice kitchen.excellent breakfast in fountain sports bar.nice staff. not that fancy but spacious.the major minus of this guest house is the lift (no lift) specially if your room in 3rd floor and the loud music coming from gym early in the morning. gym, pool and bar are public which is good cause you get to see new faces daily.wi-fi is fast comparing to other spots in addis. try their massage in gym it is good and for $7. area is called ednamo it is the newest in addis and has everything.no housekeeping unless u ask for it.paying by credit cards is impossible unless you do it one day ahead of check out.

Room Tip: ask for suite in first floor

I find the hotel facilities as okay. The Gym is really great. Room size is okay. The hot water is a big problem. and water flow in shower is not great either. Breakfast is not up to mark. Overall, one can find better hotel in Addis for same price.

Ok, I would have to say, that I seriously disagree with the person who said that this hotel is "falling to pieces". Nothiing could be farther from the truth.

I traveled with John's organization (Food for the Hungry) in mid-late July to do some short term team work in another part of Ethiopia, but we stayed the first night, and a day on the last part of the trip.

PROS:

1.QUICK and EASY to get to the airport, and touristy sites. Everything seemed to be a very short drive. As well as restaurants. It was nice to get off the plane, get our stuff, get through customs, and be CLOSE to the hotel to change/shower/eat/nap.

2. Staff was very friendly, and communicated very easily. When we got there, I was rooming with a teammate, and we needed an extra bed in our room, and in about 2-3 minutes it was there, and set up. A+++

3. Food in the Hotel restaurant was beyond great. From what I could fathom, it all seemed to be pretty reasonably priced. And the food was of excellent quality.

4. When you walk into the rooms, you see how high quality they are. I was surprized to see this little gem in Ethiopia. I would stay there again, and pay any price for it.

Really can't find many cons at all, water pressure was low sometimes, and it was a room, again...I would stay there without any question. I hope to return to Ethiopia one day, and am looking forward to some great Tibs in the restaurant.....Great place, great staff, STAY HERE!

After reviewing many hotels for our foreign guests, our organization decided on Bole Rock for the following reasons:

1. Value: our non-profit has teams traveling from Europe, Asia and the US year round and having them spend the first night at Bole Rock is a "soft-landing" for our guests. The room rates include access to the pool and gym, free Internet service and breakfast - so our team members are able to stretch after longs flights, send confirmation emails upon arrival and have a good meal before turning in.

2. Access to the airport/shuttle: Bole Rock has been exceptional in getting our teams from the airport to the hotel in a matter of minutes. The hotel is located less than two miles from the airport and the shuttle service has been available (free of charge) at any time of arrival. The shuttle driver is always located inside the airport just as passengers are exiting the customs area, holding a clearly marked sign indicating Bole Rock.

3. Location: again, easy access to the airport and even easier access to downtown. Bole Rock is located one block from Ethiopia's largest cinema (showing current US films), Edna Mall, and many restaurants. The short, dirt road leading into the hotel is in need of some maintainence but it is only 100 meters long and not really an issue but I did reduce one star for this.

4. Staff: the hotel staff are incredibly freindly and are able to communicate very well in English. Within five minutes of asking for an additional bed for a suite recently, the bed had arrived and was being set up!

5. Restaurant: the restaurant is of good value as well. The large, thin crust chicken pizza (best in Addis) is less than $5! The restaurant has four or five large screen TV's tuned in to sports, news and/or Discovery. There are pool tables located above the restaurant. The only thing I would complain about here is the somewhat slow service in waiting for the food to arrive once it's been ordered. Having bread or a few light snacks to have on hand - or a coffee ceremony - would be a nice way to wait on the food to arrive.

6. Pool, gym and sauna: after returning to Addis from project sites, our team members are always eager to relax and Bole Rock provides exceptional means to relieve stress.

I read some of the comments from what seems to be a disgruntled guest, below, and I would disagree about the dark halls and poor location. After speaking to all of our team members, the only negative comment came regarding lack of hot water on one or two occassions. I have spoken to Bole Rock regarding this and they assured me they are working to address the issue.

I have no reservation in recommending this hotel to foreign guests.

Wishing you a pleasant stay in Addis.

Booked in for 14 nights and left after 2. Hotel is in Bole, down a dirt track in the middle of a building site so a lot of mud on the night we arrived. The “reception” is a desk at the bottom of stairs gloomy to say the least. Our room, a suite, was on the 3rd floor – but there is no lift. The design and style of the room was so mixed up - there has been an attempt to create a hip cool and trendy hotel but hasn’t worked. There was a small kitchenette in the room with a sink clinging to the wall, huge fancy oven hood but no fridge!? and the oven was full of kitchen utensils. The living room was cold with no atmosphere, poor lighting, a carpet which was not hoovered and dirty and a broken curtain rail and with curtains trailing dirty on the floor.
The bedroom was dirty. The blanket on the bed had 2 hairs on when we arrived it. The sheets were cheap and thin and didn’t fit the bed. The furniture in the bedroom was cheap and broken with the bedside table scribbled with pencil marks and falling to bits at the bottom. Behind the bed the floor was filthy with hairs and dust.
The bathroom was no better. Huge expensive sink but the fitting & tiling was terrible. At 11pm at night there was no hot water – after a long KLM flight a cold shower was all that was on offer. Next morning same story and we had to wash with lukewarm water. The towels were cheap, torn and falling to bits. We thought this hotel would be ok for our 10month old daughter but it was full of hazards. The fittings generally are poor with flooring not fitted properly and many sharp edges as well as electric cables in the middle of the bedroom wall for the TV and we could not open the “french windows” as the space on the bottom railing is too big and enough for an infant to fall through.
The pool we thought we could use is not for the hotel guests alone but is a public pool so its packed with non residents.
When we came to pay there was a problem as we had booked online with the Ethio hotels www and expected to pay $91 but the hotels marketing manager seemed as though she didn’t know about the Ethio website and the rate so several phone calls were made taking about 20 mins in the end though we paid $91.
Only good thing was breakfast we had in our room – it was ok and the staff were quite pleasant.
This is not the worst hotel in the world but its overpriced for such as poor standard and finish. Its probably worth about $45 per night certainly not $95. There are too many new medium priced hotels in Addis that offer better standards than Bole Rock
We left and went to the Bole Ambassador round the corner and got a corporate rate of $89 (inclusive of service charges and tax) for the next 12 nights and were very happy there.
