I choose to stay at Global Hotel given its proximity to the AU, which is the only reason that makes me go to Addis Abeba.
The hotel is rated 4 star, but in fact, it should be 2 1/2 for their service and hospitality, in comparison to hotels standards in South Africa. Bathrooms are generally cleaned Ethiopian style, but maintenance is a major problem in most hotels in Addis. Bathtub/wash basin sealant are somewhat weird off white and misapplied (see pics).
Rooms are spacious with King/Queen size beds for single occupancy and 2 double bed if placed in tween room. Bedding (including sheets and pillows are clean and comfortable) and you can have them changed as often as you want.
Breakfast is not bad. Although they cant make a perfect fried egg, I scored them 7 out of 10 for their omelets.
Staff at reception are courteous and very friendly. However their friendliness is not always useful when you complain of something wrong in the rooms and they simply don't attend to it. Amongst all of them Rebecca if the best both in communication and actioning. The rest will just shake their heads and whisper "eesh"and do nothing.
Room service is good and available 24/7. However prices on the menu are subject to 10% service plus 15% government Tax, which makes it expensive at the end of the day. Dishes are served small portions. If you like to eat well, consider getting a starter before a main course.
Internet is available wirelessly in all floors at reasonable speed, except pick hours (5-10pm) when most guests make use of the net. Yet is it possible to watch a streaming video with few interruptions. The only catch is that you can only connect one device per room. Unless you use the lobby area.
The Hotel offers free airport shuttle services at any time. There's no gym, but a steam room on the cave which I never used. There's a disco downstairs, which noise can be annoying on weekends, specially if you are staying between 2nd and 3rd floors towards the street.
in a nutshell it is not bad. Although, recently, Concorde, another hotel down the road, has been refurbished and offers lots more entertainment and affordable room rates.
A practice which I categorically reprove from many hotels in Addis, is the hike in tariffs during what they call "pick season"(basically only when AU Summits take place there), adding 100% on top of the rack rate. Watch, as new hotels in the area are being built and others renovated, offering more options.
