This hotel, in the vicinity of Arrat Kilo in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia, has a wonderful roof terrace with functioning Wifi. The roof also houses a space for parties and Conferences and a comfortable Indoor bar. You can have meals on the terrace.
The regular restaurant is one floor down. "Ferenji" (foreigner) fare is alright but there is little in the way of Ethiopian cuisine. The hotel is favoured by many NGOs
The rooms also have a nice view but the bath rooms are in the usual semi-sorry state.
The staff is friendly but unsophisticated.
The hotel accepts VISA and Exchanges foreign currency without problem.
The location is a bit off but taxis are regularly parked outside.

Room Tip: There is no lift and the rooms are on three floors.

i stayed at Ras Amba hotel during a recent trip to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. After spending the night at the hotel and waiting for over an hour for the water to get hot in the morning to take shower, I contacted the front desk staff for assistance. An employee in uniform showed up and told me to try again after 10 minutes. I did as he instructed with no luck. I contacted them again and asked them if there is anything they can do to help. i was told for the second time to try after 15 minutes. The water was still ice cold and I called the front desk again and asked them if there is anything else they can do to address the issue. The gentleman said if the water does not get warm then you have to take a cold shower. I was very disappointed with the manner of communication from this employee and reported the incident to the front desk manager as I checked out to look for a better place where the shower actually works and i don't get a sarcastic remark from an employee who does not understand what his job function is.

Room Tip: Ask if the shower works and actually try it before you check in.

I have lost count of the number of times I have stayed at this great little hotel! The place is a little distressed, but the friendlyness of the staff make up for that. They cannot do enough for me and my colleagues from Vision Aid Overseas.

Room Tip: rooms at the fron can be a little noisy because of the new road. But no view to speak of at the back...

My first time in Ethiopia so I have nothing to compare it to but this is a great little hotel with friendly staff. I will echo a few points about the general decor as it is shabby to say the least and the I wouldnt recommend eating there apart from breakfast as there are plenty of decent little cafes / restaurants within walking distance that offer better food at half the price. Oh and dont expect any sleep if there are weddings going on!

But the excellent staff including the guards and the rooftop bar and its view more than make up for it!

I cannot believe some of the scitics here are writing about the same Hotel as I am! The Ras Amba is a great place to stay. I have made use of this hotel many many times, along with many of my colleagues and we have received nothing but great service from the staff and management. Iam allowed to hold meetings in my rooftop 'office' and the staff go out of their way to help us. Yes, sometimes the water is cool, yes the menu is 'interesting' and yes, the furnishings are a little tired. But if you want 5star luxury then pay 5star prices and go to the Hilton or Sheraton and fre up the rooms for those of us who want to stay here.

THIS HOTEL HAS A SERIOUS PROBLEM OF LICE, WE WERE ABOUT 10 ON A BUSINESS TRIP, STAYED IN DIFFRENT ROOMS AND ALL OF US HAD TO GET OUR HEADS SHAVED AND CLOTHE THROUWN AWAY BECAUSE OF HEAD LICE. This is the beginning of our problem i can go on and on for 1hr. We were supose to stay for a week but cut our loss on the second day and went to the Hilton after cleaning up and throwing most of our belonging. We spoke to the manager and he was "crazy" and "erogant" didn't do anything to help, would not recomend it for anyone even if the stay is free.

The rooms are somewhat basic, and the water and internet access are a bit unreliable at times, but then they are in most places in Addis. This hotel has wonderful staff, and a rooftop terrace where you can sit with a beer and a peasant sandwich after work, and relax. If you want to go out for dinner, the hotel works with a couple of really nice taxi drivers who will drop you off for dinner and come back later to pick you up, and also offer advice on where to go. It's not so handily located for the central area sights, but if you want to be near the University or the National Museum of Ethiopia, it's great.
