I unfortunately had to stay at this hotel for a few days when some hotels in the city center were full... I have been in and out of Addis since 2006, and have stayed at an array of guest houses and hotel in Addis.
This however was just terrible from start to finish!!!
I wish I had read some of the more objective views here before booking this hotel, as many of the more objective comments from 2009 are still valid.
As mentioned by others- the Location is terrible- unless of course you like hearing the Hyenas Howling outside at night( I kid you not- though this is quite novel)
As previously mentioned by another reviewer in the past- I booked a single- they automatically up-graded me to a so-called suite, and then was informed by the receptionist only the next day that this was going to be more money.
Food from the restraunt was adequate- but overpriced.
The room was nice- large flat screen is their main asset- but again over priced- They wanted circa150 usd for what they claim was a suite room. I did eventually get a discount- but this was after the fact - and only when I was threatening to check out.
The Bell boy/Porter was polite and seemed like the only person in the hotel who seemed to make an effort.
On my last evening -After arriving back from Addis late in the night around 12.30 am- the gate was locked and the security guard resolutely refused to open the gate- this is even after showing my room key and my driver communicating to him in Ahmaric that I was a guest with a room already booked in the hotel.
He made us wait for another 10 minutes while he went to receptionist/clerk to check- she came out looked and closed the door... when he did finally open the gate and we got in the compound- I again had to bang on the reception door as the clerk had decided to lock the door once again .... she finally opened it after I waved my key through the window. Classic!!
They did apologise for this -but this hotel is just a catalogue of errors:As mentioned by other reviewers- WiFI ona and off- General strange feel- Staff little english-reception staff- are pretentious, and unfriendly and seem like they are looking for a way to screw more money out of you. If you bring a guest they want 50 usd- again you can get a discount on this only after haggling- But they are Just hard work people to deal with.
Do your research and stay somewhere closer to town, that is cheaper and friendlier.
While I understand-This is Ethiopia and not US/Europe, I have stayed in many less equipped guesthouses in addis and have not encountered this atmosphere-this hotel would work better with a change in attitude from their staff.
Stay here at your Peril.
