If hygiene is a priority.....Kaldis is the best bet you can have in Addis and the fact that its a chain of 22 coffee shops around the city...you will find one in every suburb...

Though inspired by Starbucks, the quality of the food and the coffee still has a long way to go before it reaches the Starbucks standard...

Always crowded...nice place to meet friends in Addis..

Zefresh Mall branch is the best in the chain...

If you are looking for a little familiarity of home in the U.S. then this is a good place to start. Just as others have said it is similar to Starbucks. It was a nice change of pace to sit down and enjoy a yummy caramel macchiato and also have some familiar menu options. We stopped here for a quick lunch one day and the sambusas were really good. Also, they do have "to go" cups if you ask for one. We needed coffee "to go" one morning and our driver said Kaldi's would do this for us, we ordered inside, then the server followed us out and delivered the coffee right out to our van. We were very impressed. Although, coffee is good almost everywhere in Ethiopia you can't go wrong with a visit to Kaldi's.

Kaldi's was founded by a very sharp, enterprising young Ethiopian woman who attempted to open the first actual Starbucks in Ethiopia but when she was in the US, her application to do so was rejected. So, she returned home to Ethiopia and entirely copied the brand right down to the signage, logo, seating, and just about everything else. This story is true because the owner, herself, told it to me personally, way back in 2008 in her original Kaldi's.

Kaldi's coffee is good but certainly not any better than the average cup of coffee you can buy in just about every little cafe on every street in Addis for a price about 80% less! The difference is that Kaldi's high prices segregate you from the ordinary folks in town and ensure that your table, cups, and general cafe environment is a bit cleaner and far more Westernized in appearance, style, and has English-speaking staff. Although the food attempts to mimic Starbuck's, don't expect it to taste anything even remotely like what you might hope for.

Kaldi's owner continues to enjoy the same level of economic success in Ethiopia as Starbucks does in the West and just about everywhere you look in Addis--you will see a Kaldi's! I applaud the owner's entrepreneurial spirit and her success but if it's just plain good Ethiopian coffee that you want to drink and you want to do it with Ethiopians in an authentic setting--go to any cafe on the street and say, "Macciato!"
